And now its the CV joints!

Post by milleplod »

I picked my X7 up from having the rack rebuilt today, the guys there quite cheerily told me that both CV joints were clicking! To be honest, I thought I'd been hearing one when turning right out of a local uphill junction over the last couple of weeks. Anyway, my MoT is due soon, so I obviously need to get them sorted. Big job?

Can anyone give me some part numbers so I can start shopping around please - VIN is VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]. eBay is full of them, most are for manual cars, and I assume I'll need ones specific to the auto.

I’m having my Anti Roll Bar joints done, as one has been an MOT advisory for the last 3 years! Managed to source originals on the web at a vastly discounted price.

I’ll put that up here too in case......

Marc, any idea what the "E" prefix means for the blue-numbered parts? When I looked up mine, they were significantly cheaper than the black-numbered part.

Marc, its the CV joints that are making the noise, which, unless my eyes are worse than I thought, aren't shown on the pic! :-D

For some reason my steering gaiters are not round but oval? Not sure what has happened to them. I sometimes hear a popping noise when turning at full lock, I think they are catching on something what with not being the right shape.

I had the MOT in December and nothing was mentioned, do I need to do anything?

CV joints only a fail if they are really bad. If they just knock a bit on full lock under load, they will be OK. Quite unusual really for them to go - although I had one seize up on my 307, and when I took the boot off it was full of greasy water rather then grease, so no surprise really! They are not available separately from Citroen. Have a look here for CV joints: https://www.jandrcvjoints.co.uk/ They seem very cheap, but the one I had was fine. They are a bit of a PITA to change on a hydraulic X7, due to the design of the front suspension. My only thought would be are you sure it's the CVs? The bottom joints fail for fun, and make all manner of odd noises. A CV joint makes a very specific click click noise, you can't mistake it for anything else!

They are alternative parts for cars over 3years. The parts are approved, but not Citroen originals Mike. It’s like if you go to Citroen they offer 2prices for some fixed price repairs, one will be less and they will use the non original parts for a cheaper price. Often referred to as Citroen ‘Originals’ or ‘Essentials’.

Here’s the rest of the front axle hubs and such Pete, that’s why I put up the ARB links. I’ll have to put these up in sections given the sheer number of parts!! :rofl2:

Which still doesn't include the CV joints...

They're on the driveshafts page, but, not available separately anyway.

Hi, I realized today that the left CV joint gaiter is torn. My question, is the automatic and manual gearbox CV joint gaiter same or different? Mine is an RHR with am6 automatic x7.

They are all different depending on engine too - not just gearbox type. Post your VIN here if you want the correct part
