C5 Estate tailgate dropping down
My C5 exclusive estate tailgate drops down prematurely, does anyone have a cure and can it be done by an amateur?

Re: C5 Estate tailgate dropping down
MK I, MK II or X7?
I have used this company in the past for bonnet struts - very good and excellent prices. They also do tailgate struts for most cars.

Re: C5 Estate tailgate dropping down
I removed my mk2 ones recently and got them re-gassed very successfully and cheaply.

Re: C5 Estate tailgate dropping down
If its a Mk1 I'm afraid they are expensive (if you can find them) and not easy to fit as they are behind the head lining.

That's the mark 2 Peter, I don't know what the mark 1 had. The mark 2 ones are on Ebay at around £60 - £80 each.

Re: C5 Estate tailgate dropping down
Mk1 is the same as Mk2 strut, is it not? Actually wasn't as bad to remove as I thought it was going to be.

They're not difficult to do but you do need to be supple and able to work upside down.

Re: C5 Estate tailgate dropping down
doing mine in a few days....
fired off email to SGS and had reply that they are £38 ish for a pair......on email i stated the OE no and have just called them and guess what?
someone obviously didn't read email properly and no they don't re-gas them or supply.
got 2 on way, Febi? due later this week £110 delivered
i'll be out later this pm if rain stops preparing the wooden props and stripping down head lining

Re: C5 Estate tailgate dropping down

would have been nice to see the end inside but as i've got headlining down and had a quick poke around i know why he jumps from old to new so quickly!!

Re: C5 Estate tailgate dropping down
I did mine a couple of weeks ago and found first that you need a decent tool to remove and refit the circlips. Secondly, the only really fiddly bit was getting the new struts located in their holes. On one side, I used a bit of cotton to help guide it through and for the passenger side I used a thin flat metal skewer to help locate the wobbly bit in the hole.

I ignored the 'decent tool' bit, prised them off with a long thin screwdriver, straightened them out and refitted them by using a dab of grease on the end of a bit of old 15mm copper water pipe (Flared the end out a bit) , a gentle tap and on they went.

Re: C5 Estate tailgate dropping down
2 new struts on today....not too bad a job.
2 corner trims off, 2 cargo net brackets gently fold back lining to back of seats.
i was surprised at the access to the circlips...easy enough to get circlip pliers in or as mentioned a flat screwdriver
pop the circlips off at the front, spring back the flat clip at the hinge and pull out.
push the new one in to roughly the right length and then...
long pliers make it so much easier to ease in, pop the clip back on then fit the hinge end, repeat on the other side.

Re: C5 Estate tailgate dropping down
That inner bit looks different to mine old-uns, I'm sure the depth from the outer metal was far deeper and awkward to see i.e. you would need longer pliers to reach in to the circlips.

Re: C5 Estate tailgate dropping down
i used a 45deg attachment to mine and reversible so squeeze to open but i still think you could get straight ones in?
to be honest i'm not sure why the clip is needed? it's under sufficient pressure even when open and closed is full pressure and i possibly would consider not refitting but i do have time so no issue.
