1.4 16v petrol engine oil leak

Post by Paul-R »

It's actually on my daughter's Pug 206 but there's more activity here!

It's had an oil leak from the engine for several years. I originally thought that it was the camshaft oil seal but when I took the timing belt off for replacement it was obvious that wasn't the cause. Since then I've done some reading and it appears that the leak is most likely from the head gasket and both 8v and 16v have the same weakness.

The car has been off the road for a while as she has been at college but now she wants me to get it up and running for the summer. The problem is that the MOT will now fail the car for a bad oil leak so, if it is to be resurrected, the leak has to be stopped. Are there any solutions that might work without taking the head off, even if it only reduces the amount to a dribble? What is it that actually fails? Can anything be done to make sure it doesn't leak if a new head gasket is fitted (presumably the head will need skimming so extra to that)?

The car has had a lot spent on it and it's not so long since some bodywork was done and a new clutch fitted. On the other hand just before she took it off the road there was an EML and, I think, an emissions warning. That's probably at least one of the Lambda sensors but it may be the catalytic convertor.

A lot of plusses and minuses to weigh up but the oil leak is the first to consider.

"They all do that sir".. my MOT man commented that he'd be surprised if mine wasn't leaking.

Mine wasn't the head. It was a 16V 1.4 Petrol. It was actually the cam covers that were leaking, but it runs down the block and fills the plug wells in such a way it looks like the head.

I removed the intake gubbins, removed both cam covers , cleaned all the oil up and sealed the cam covers up with black silicon and that cured it. You might want to try that first.

Iiiiinteresting, I'd not heard that before. When I get back in a couple of weeks time I'll take a look at that.

I've got some pics somewhere I took when I did it. I'll root them out.
