EGR Throttle valve

Post by Daz3nt »

Im getting an error code p1402 on my xsara Picasso 2.0 HDI. the full message reads

Permanent Fault,
Exhaust Gas Recycling throttle electrovalve. Throttle electrovalve circuit in short circuit to earth or open circuit.

where do I start? I can't even find where this is. googling doesn't help either

I believe this is the Doseur.... with your fault referring to the vacuum solenoid that controls it.

Some details here: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=58705&hilit=doseur

It might be different on your engine but on mine it's bolted directly to the inlet manifold.

Here's the EGR and as you can see there are several electro valves marked (Part no 6) - click to zoom the diagram. The second one shown to the right would provide the vacuum to the EGR valve marked as '1'
Xsara Picasso EGR.PNG
Regardless of that though, the code is likely referring to the EGR being blocked (probably with some soot build up) which is restricting the opening and closing of the valve. This does happen over time as a consequence of the exhaust gas residue build up, so probably needs removing for a good clean up.

The Dosseur that EDC5 refers to is below at number 17 and that is operated by the first electrovalve. But in this case that code refers to a blocked EGR valve essentially.

There's no feed back from the EGR valve on the 2.0 HDI, Marc - all it knows is if the electrovalve draws too much current. You can probably check the resistance of the valves with a multi meter. Used to be a common problem on the Xantia HDi 110 - normally the turbo electrovalve gave up; and the solution in less enlightened times was to swap over to the EGR one, leaving the EGR permanently closed. I suspect EDC is right, and it's the one controlling the butterfly on the inlet to the manifold in this case. Removing the EGR on a 2.0 HDi, especially in a Xsara Pic is close to impossible - without removing the engine anyway!

I thought it wasn’t going to be simple Richard, a bit of a sod to get to at rear of the engine to access and tights as a crab’s ....there.

The simple way to test if the electro valve is faulty is to swap it with the EGR one, you may be able to just swap the electrical connectors if there is enough slack in the wires.
If the fault code changes to an EGR electrovalve fault (not EGR throttle butterfly) then the valve is faulty.
