My understanding of waxstat's is that the sensor (in gold) reacts to the coolant as it heats up, moving out slowly from its housing until fully out, thereby slowly releasing the cold start mechanism leaving the engine idling at its optimum speed. The gold sensor on this one is permanently out. I've had it in a bucket of boiling water and also the freezer but there's no movement.
Any ideas or is it kapluncked?

Re: Waxstat
They leak and the wax all gets away, so yes it's likely kaput.

Re: Waxstat
I believe that these things have a pin and a rubber sheath inside and then the wax - if the sheath splits the wax can be forced through and then it becomes useless.

Re: Waxstat
the Auto Opener on my Greenhouse roof-light works on the same principle, easier to understand on something as simple as that. Just refitted it for summer (frost can kill it, so in the house for winter)Eddie Nuff wrote: ↑04 Apr 2018, 17:52 My understanding of waxstat's is that the sensor (in gold) reacts to the coolant as it heats up, moving out slowly from its housing until fully out

If they really are that similar, doesn't bode well for Waxstats fitted through this winter.

Re: Waxstat
cor, there's a thought !! I believe the principle's the same, but hopefully there's something in the detail to avoid the need to take it off for the winter !

Re: Waxstat
Now there's a marketing opportunity for someone :
"Protect your car's cooling system for winter. Just subsribe to our Waxstat care package for just £(insert random numbers here) and we'll come and remove your thermostat at the first sign of frost each year. Experts agree that if you remove your thermostat during winter then it won't be subjected to the ageing effects of cold."
