Xantia S2 height corrector repair kit

Unread post by electronmirror »

Does anyone know of a source for this repair kit, the threaded stud with the ball, not the dogbone.

The original fitment method is rubbish, not even spot welded just barely peened over so of course it eventually works loose and pops out. Had the same thing happen on the rear height corrector 7 years ago and managed a repair using Araldite after cleaning thoroughly.

Would much prefer to use a decent repair technique rather than 'sticking' it back into place.

No, but it can be made by a decent machine shop using the old ball...

I've had two instances of this in the past and found a spot of weld after loosely riveting it back in place works well.

If you clean it up really well it is also very amenable to being brazed if you don't have welding gear...

Thanks for that Jim.

Presently the 'stick it with Araldite' solution is working [-o< because I can't spare the time to take the car off the road.

I don't have welding gear but the brazing method seems almost as good because that ball headed stud is not subject to great force.
In a few weeks I will be able spare the time to work on it, just hope it lasts long enough to get me to the X Rally and back on 15th. :-D

You'll need to check the size of your ball (ooh ! errr ! missus), but this eBay search would be a good starting point:

For new ones, try https://www.strutsdepot.com/end-fittings/ball-studs/, or just google ball-ended stud.

Thanks chaps. Last night I spent a good couple of hours searching eBay and any other place I could think of to buy these ball headed bolts/studs, as most people seem to describe them.

Well this being a French car, why would they use a common size such as 10mm when an 8mm is much more obscure. :grr:

Measured the well worn ball on the car and it came out as 7.64mm so I think it probably left the factory as 8mm :spit:

Time to find a local engineering company...

From Steve's link above - this should do if the threaded portion is long enough:

threaded ball stud might be a slightly better search than ball-ended stud, as there seem to be also some other things called ball end thrust screw

Pictures work better than description. This website has both types

Hi Ted,

These are on amazon.de (just use your normal amazon.uk sign-in to place an order - it works the same)...

A source has been found =D>

Many thanks to those who made suggestions, I placed an order for some of these ball headed threaded stud/bolts with SGS Engineering yesterday and they arrived this morning.

I couldn't believe the cost though.......95p each :!: \:D/

I know the rear height corrector cradle can be removed without disturbing the hydraulic pipework, is the same true of the front one?
If so it could be a reasonably quick job to do at the weekend.

No, sadly, it's not... Being tucked right up in the subframe means the hydraulic pipes must be disconnected. It's a fiddly old job but one big plus-point is that the unions usually undo easily enough as there is often no corrosion on them by virtue of accidental corrosion-proofing as a result of engine/gearbox oil leaks/spills over the years :)
