Ticking after timing belt change

Post by MarkandCath »

I have just done the timing belt on a 207 1.6 HDi 2007. I used the pins to lock the crank, cam and pump. I turned the engine 12 times afterwards and rechecked the pins all went in. Oh and the tensioner pointer was still dead center.

I put the covers back on, replaced the engine mount and the bottom pulley with a new bolt at 35nm + 190 but I didn't put the fan belt back on. I started her up to hear what sounds like a tappet ticking away like a good one. I have pumped the primer bulb until it has gone firm in case it was air in the injectors but no difference.

Any ideas what I may have done?

The engine did move backward a few degrees when I undid the pulley bolt but not a great deal (20 to 30 degrees) and the compression feels fine by hand. It starts first time but if I have jumped the chain would it even run?

Sounds like you may have jumped a tooth - it will run being a tooth or two out

I haven't got the 1.6 diesel but when doing my 2.0hdi 8v I locked the crankshaft. I would think it probably more important to do that on your own engine as any backward movement is critical with the chain and belt system. Do you have the floating pulley at the bottom, where you line up between a gap?

It's possible it was doing it before and you didn't notice - a leaking injector seal on this engine can sound just like a knackered cam lobe - pop the engine cover off and have a good listen around the injectors. I thought our C4 had a knackered cam lobe till it started to smell exhausty inside, and then I had a good listen / feel under the bonnet and identified a blowing injector!

Thanks for the replies. It has a leak on injector 4 and that was on my todo list next but the noise was 100% not there before. I guess I will have to take the covers off tomorrow and check the timing one more time. After that it is cam cover off to check the chain timing.

Correct me if I am wrong but it is injectors out to get the cam cover off on these engines is it not? If so I guess I will get to do all 4 injector seals at the same time.

You need to do a search '1.6hdi do not turn engine backwards' Lighty found out how fickle these 1.6hdi 16v are to being turned backwards even a very small amount. Do the search and read up then remove the cam cover.

I am all sorted now and I am a very lucky boy.

I took the timing cover off again only to find the tensioner loose. I am paranoid over these timing belts and so the torque wrench is always used and I turned the engine over 12 times, reinserted the pins and checked the damn tensioner pointer and it was OK. It is back reset again now but with threadlock and 30NM instead of 25NM.

Engine runs great now and I am grateful for that but I will never know how the hell that happened.

Oh and which bright spark thought fan belt tensioners were boring and we now need stretchy fan belts instead. Took me half an hour to twig that you could hold the belt onto the pulley with grips while you walk it on but if I wasn't so happy the engine was OK I think tools would have flown.

Thanks for the responses.

Wow, lucky boy indeed :)

How old/well used is your torque wrench? Also how "big" is it? (operating a beefy 1/2" one down at the lower end of it's scale is more likely to throw up inaccuracies than it is using a smaller one in the middle/upper part of it's range IMO). I'm also a bit paranoid about tensioner bolts working loose, threadlock is a nice idea if you can keep hold of the stuff long enough to use it on more than one job lol!

Also, I'd gladly use stretchy belts sans-tensioner on our Xantiae. The things are a right pain when they get noisy/weak or sieze! In fact, I may well look into whether a tensioner-delete is viable given the belt run & give it a shot!
