Forums still dead ?

Unread post by Junglist »

Hi everyone, not a dig at all, as I’m a new member on here but having previously been a paid up member on RTOC for over 5 years which with the appearance of facefuck took a small dive but still kept it’s head above the water line.
It’s very easy these days to just Google or enquir on Facebook your issues or to gather info on a meet etc.
I’ve posted here a couple of times & the same on Facebook,,
seems I would get more repies on Facebook posts but more meaningful posts on a forum like this.

Is the club forum still alive ????
I appreciate I may have drank several vodkas

Ok i understand what time it is and people are asleep, busy 😉 🙏 etc.
But 10 years ago on rtoc for example for a stupid post I’d have at least 2 “ stop being a wining bellend” posts by now 🤣🤣
It’s true Facebook/ free social media has killed off the forums ....
But on a dying note if I still owned my R5 I’d probably still be paying into a club rtoc or not ,just for the badge 🤣 oh and discounts ( that I rarely even used)
There’s a lot of info on here that you need to be a premium member to view I think ?
1 keep it that way and hope Facebook dies.
2. Open premium files to all for free but maybeafyer x amount of posts or club meets etc.

Chin up it’s only internet and nothing we say can do any harm.
Unless you support corbyn or are gender neutral , perhaps a student I don’t know. Watch to much bbc , maybe you’re a Muslim in a wheelchair? 🙄.

Really went off track there.
No offence to people as we all are people in the end.

Pls pm for my solicitor’s details

You would need to annoy us a little bit more, or break our rules to get a ban, so no luck this time.

Although this forum does get a fair amount of traffic, and most topics get good replies, it is up to the other members to decide what is interesting, and you may be unlucky and post a topic that does not match the collective knowledge of our members.

There is by the way, no premium or paid content on this site.

All motoring forums are declining, largely I think because not many people repair their own cars now, this one is probably the busiest of the lot, or certainly the ones I subscribe to. The only busier one is the Vintage Radio Forum where they are now restoring some of the sets I sold new!

You could say the same about every department of diy. More and more people don't want to do anything for themselves now. They would rather call in an 'expert'. My able-bodied neighbour even has a guy to cut his grass!

I don't think it's so much 'call in an expert' JohnD, more a case of chuck it away and buy new. :)

Wow, those certainly were "late night at the computer while drinking" posts. But they were in the right section surely?

Having said that I would hope that meaningful posts are the essential difference between forums and FB. I've looked over my wife's shoulder at her FB page and I really can't abide the general dross posted. It's just not for me.

I don't do Facebook, nor drinking & my life is markedly better for the both of them! ;)

That said though, if this forum was not as active as it is (reasonably so, all things considered), then I would likely have to create a new FB profile and just use it for joining groups on there. There will always be a far better ratio of enthusiasts to nobheads on a dedicated forum though I think, no matter how dead it dies.

Also, this forum has helped me make so many savings and sourced so many good cars/parts through here in the last 4 years that I consider it only right that I make a small donation when I can to help with upkeep. (plus the stickers are excellent :D )

P.S. You should see the cheesy chips and sweet chilli sauce I had for my dinner before...

Me neither, and I agree this forum was and still is a mine of information, long may it continue.

Although Facebook (FB) is great for banter and keeping in touch with a wide circle of friends it is not good for asking any technical questions... You may get an answer but it's a bit fleeting and somewhat of the instant...

If you loose it then it's almost impossible to find again as Facebook does not really do searches that well...

At least with forums, once the question is asked and answered it is there for ever and relatively easy to retrieve with a search.

This forum has been going since 2001 and all that knowledge gathered in that time is here, preserved and retrievable...

It's horses for courses... FB is brill for keeping in touch with friends over a wide diversity of interests whereas forums excel in the sharing of knowledge.

FB is also invaluable for organising things - parkrun, for instance, could not exist without it. All our parkrun organisation and admin takes place over a number of FB 'secret' groups...

I enjoy the best of both but this forum and FB is all I do... Unless you count WhatsApp for keeping in touch with another circle of friends who use neither this forum or FB!
