RNEG Upgrade Possibilities

Post by lankosher »

Hello,
I just joined this forum to search some information on replacing my RNEG with something newer e.g. RT6. Can you please advise what can be recommended in my case. VIN of my C5 is VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]. Not really sure if I need to replace HU and screen and anything else? I would be mostly interested in having mirror link.
Best Regards
Igor

Hi and welcome Igor.

There is a lot of info already posted on this subject within the various forums here, so I will be brief on this response:

If you are putting in anything over RNEG (MyWay) such as NG4, RT6 you will need the High Res Screen. If you are considering the SMEG / SMEG+ you will need the Touchscreen display.
With the SMEG unit, you won't be able to telecode this yourself even with Diagbox - it will require a dealer to configure with PSA server access as the SMEG will not show up in your BSI until it has been downloaded to the BSI first to enable it to be configured.

With the SMEG system, you will also need the new fascia panel as all many of the controls are no longer accessed from the console and are incorporated into the SMEG system - these can be hard to source and expensive to buy.

RT6 is easier I would say as you already have everything more or less ready from the RNEG including the GPS and other connections. Again, you just need the high res screen and get it telecoded properly.

Thank you Marc for clarification. SMEG seems far more complicated to consider therefore only RT6 is within my interests. Do I need to consider any other modifications apart from head unit and screen swap? How does mentioned telecoding work? Does it require any specific interface to make it visible for BSI?
The last question, do you by any chance have any experience with Android stuff e.g. https://pl.aliexpress.com/item/HD-touch ... autifyAB=0 Is it worth consideration?

Regarding the telecoding you will need Diagbox to do this to ensure the new unit is VIN coded to the C5 and to check the configuration options.

I have never used an aftermarket system and personally I would never touch them. I’m not sure your reversing sensors would still work or whether you would have any other issues with compatibility. But that is just my own feelings and that’s not to say you can do it. But it would be difficult to troubleshoot anything with one of these!

I have the NG4 Navidrive 3D and am completely happy with that system.

One more question - does RT6 support Mirror Link? I would like to use navigation installed on my Galaxy S6 phone.

No it doesn't Igor. Only the inbuilt Navigation system using HERE maps.

And of course, even with SMEG systems, not all apps will work with Mirrorlink or Carplay on a car system.

Pity :( at least Bluetooth music streaming works. Any other benefits comparing to RNEG?
