C4. Economy Mode Active warning.

Post by johnhuson »

Hello all, I am looking for a 7 seater and have found a 2007 C4 Picasso 1.6HDi with EGS box, which I am not sure about anyway.
Problem is that it was running OK then after cold snap it would not start, When turning the key you hear three beeps
and warning light Economy Mode Active is on. Most things still work, windows, lights etc so am not convinced it is a collapsed
battery.
There is no sound when key is turned, no clicking. The green flag man attached a battery pack to no effect.
Before I travel a great rail journey with my Lexia to a small village to try and sort it could you advise me of
what this might be please? Thanks.

I suspect the severe cold has indeed upset things, as has happened to myself and others on various other electrical and mechanical systems.

In this case with the EGS piloted manual clutch and gearbox System it’s just another heap of problems when it plays up.

Most of the electronic starting issues friends have suffered over the cold snap have disappeared after the thaw and return of the milder temperatures.

With regard to economy mode that will continue to manifest whilst the battery does not meet certain conditions. Starting and running the car will not clear this necessarily if a lot consumer devices are drawing power whilst running.

A temporary jump won’t clear this either. The battery will need to be charged up and follow the BSI reset / battery removal procedure carefully.

It is of course possible that the severe cold may have caused a weak dry solder joint to contract adding to problems diagnosing the fault.

So battery and starter, fuse and earth check first then chuck up any codes you get. Take a hammer and give the starter a little knock I case the bushes are stuck.

The EGS box won't allow it to start if it's not (or doesn't think it is) in neutral - although this should give a warning message to that effect. TBH if you have not bought this, then I would look elsewhere, both the 1.6 HDi and the EGS are troublesome, and buying one that is already in trouble is asking for grey hair!!
