C5X7 number of connections on wing mirror

Post by Podather »

Hi ,
I require a replacement electric heated folding wing mirror for my c5 x7 exclusive estate
I have recently bought a replacement online , the wing mirrors appears to offer all the features I require and has a single large connector block .
My original one has an additional small connector as well as the large connector .
Can anybody advise me as to what this additional second connector controls ?
I have connected the replacement I purchased and it appears to heat, fold, adjust electrically and the indicator works just like the original but lacks the second smaller connector of my original wing mirror.
This connector must be for something but I am unsure what and can I just ignore it and keep my replacement mirror or do I need a replacement with the additional connector also ?

Thanks

Stuart

Hi Stuart and welcome.

I suspect this will be related to the additional features of that year concerning the electro chrome function. This feature was removed in later years. The electro chrome function works in conjunction with the interior rear view mirrors and they will darken according to sunlight levels. The extra connectors are likely to be for controlling this function and the reason why replacements are hard to find that have this feature.

Compare the passenger one with the driver one. They will have a green tint when active and I suspect either one or both will not be working. I can’t remember now if they both have to be connected to operate at all, but no doubt you will be now to confirm.

On my right hand drive C5 X7, the right hand mirror has the external temperature sensor fitted, so you might want to check to see if you've still got the external temperature displayed inside on the screen as the second connector may be asociated with that.
Sadly no longer a C5 owner :(

That one is in the 10 block main connector Bobs (9&10). But the above I should of said may be reversed for right hand drive, so thanks for reminding me!

Thank you for your assistance
It is the near side mirror I have replaced on a right hand drive vehicle so the outside temperature sensor is on the offside mirror.
That would have been my educated guess as to what the additional connector was for had the mirror I replaced had this sensor .
I will attempt to see if I can notice a difference between the mirror glass on each side to point to this connector being for the electro chrome function , though it may not function on either mirror now I have disconnected one side.
I replaced the mirror because the original would overfold on activation of the central locking and fail to stop at 90 degrees but carry on folding until making contact with the door , marking the door in the process.
I was able to separate a small connector in the mirror housing that stopped the folding function just on the near side but I ideally wanted to maintain this function and could not understand why the mirror began to overfold nor rectify it so It stopped where it should (aside from stopping it with my hand each time)
I believe you can turn off the mirror folding upon locking option with a diagbox or Lexia but I don’t possess either.
I have DRL’s fitted that don’t function and want to activate these also as I believe if installed they need to be working or it is an mot failure from later this year

Thanks

Stuart

Hi Stuart, the DRLs will not be an MOT failure as they were not required back in 2009, which is why they were all supplied non activated for the UK market.

They will need activating in 2 places should you want them working. Firstly using the diagnostic tool to enable them and secondly from the lighting menu accessed from the left hand steering wheel scroll button (pushing it in) whilst stationary. You may want to try the second stage first in case they have already been enabled.

Looking at some replacement mirrors for sale online that have both of the connectors (6 pin and a 10 pin) they state in the listing that they have an auto dimming function so as you very kindly researched for me GiveMeABreak the second 6 pin connector would appear to be purely for this electro chromatic dimming function and also position indexing with the seat memory function.
The question now I suppose is would I rather have the auto dimming function and suffer the folding issue by retaining the original mirror or keep the replacement mirror that folds correctly and lose the auto dimming?
I could always attempt to purchase a mirror that has both connectors but haven’t been able to find one in the red colour of my car .
Most seem to be single connector , wonder why Citroën chose to drop this auto dimming option ?

I have accessed the lighting menu through the scroll button but the DRL’s are not listed so I need to get them enabled I assume and then they will appear as an option in the menu.
I may revert to my original mirror and disable auto fold on locking at the same time if you can , that way I can keep the auto dimming.
Just need to get access to the diagnostics

Thank you once again for your help and advice

No problem, yes once enabled the option will appear on the menu.

As for the dimming function, I think it was all about cost saving measures. The dimming one is about £450 each!!!!

I bought two auto-dimming mirrors recently and had them fitted to a high-spec VTR+ NAV which appears to have the corresponding wiring for these. It also has the auto-dimming/electrochromatic interior rearview mirror. The issue is that in Lexia there doesn't appear to be any way to "turn them on" - so they're just sitting there with a slight blueish tint to them but they don't react at night like the rearview one does.

Any thoughts about what I'm missing here would be much appreciated!
