Egr query

Hi, I am a bit unsure on what route I should go down next, to cut a long story short my car went in for a new gearbox and the garage knackered my ecu so I have ended up with a second hand ecu and bsi set. When the car went into the garage there was no faults at all on the car, now the engine light is permanently on and I have had the car at Citroen and they say my egr valve is stuck open. The car is running good and I do about 60 miles per day so what are the chances of a faulty egr without the car running rough?

Could the new ecu/bsi be faulty?

Do I spend £200 on a getting a new egr fitted or £200 on another ecu kit fitted?

The car is a 07 Xsara Picasso 1.6 hdi 92

It would run like a dog if the EGR valve was really stuck open. Really you should take it back to the original garage and get them to fix it, otherwise take them to the small claims court for the value of the car - any mechanic worth his salt should know to take the battery off before attempting major surgery!!

Yes, as Richard advises. It's not up to you to take the hit on this.
If necessary, get an independent AA/RAC/etc engineer assessment, and use their report as part of your claim.
If necessary, let the garage know you are involving local Trading Standards as well.

My plan is to take him to a small claims but I really don’t trust him to touch my car again and he doesn’t seem willing to help because he doesn’t think he is to blame at all. I have a council pit test coming in a few weeks and need to get the engine management light off so it will pass.
