Missed oil changes

Neglected C4 1.6hdi which has not had an oil change in 40k / 3yr

I'm planning to drop the oil replacing filter + sump plug

Then run for upto 1k then drop the oil replacing filter + sump plug

sensible ?

I'm thinking there'll be quite a bit of sludge in it & flushing might do more harm then good ?

Yep, sounds sensible.
Probably don't need to run it as long as 1k - depends how quickly you will run up that mileage.

You may be in for a world of pain here. Some of the 1.6 HDi engines had a very serious issue where sludge blocked certain oil paths, and the turbo would then fail (and the engine could then eat turbochargers every 30,000 miles).

I'd be very tempted to whip the sump off just to check what's loitering in there in the way of sludge, and also to check the oil strainer is clear. Probably not what you want to hear, but if it's all fine, you can sleep a bit easier

Change the oil and filter, take the filter out of the turbo oil feed. Run it a few 00 miles listening out for rattling at cold start, drop the oil, remove the sump, rip the strainer out of the oil pick up, refit sump, change the oil every 6k, and it should be OK

I have never seen an engine in such an appalling state. I've opened up diesels with the best part of 250,000 miles on them, and found the innards clean as a whistle, except for a thin coating of black-tinted oil.

I really do question oil changes at 20,000-30,000 miles . . . at what savings, for heaven's sake?

My own engines have run without noticeable wear or residue (even in the sump) on mineral 20W-50 diesel grade for years now, with oil and filter changes at 6000mi/10000km.

EGR can't be helping, I guess.

Richard I never thought about removing the strainer from the oil pickup. Probably not a bad idea on an old engine.

That is pretty grim. I too have never seen an engine in such a state. Ridiculous to have such extended oil change intervals.
I always change mine at 1/3 to 1/2 of the recommended distances but do do a lot of short trips.
Oil comes out clean, no sludge or solids.

I think that's really a backside covering advert from the turbo company, also a bit of scaremongering, I have seen engines like that but they had rarely been serviced at all and had been run on cheapo oil for many thousands of miles.

Modern detergent oils changed at or before the recommended intervals don't get 'sludgy' the dirt is kept in the liquid oil and taken out by the filter.

Back in the days pre detergent oils there would often be an inch thick layer of mud in the bottom of the sump when you removed it but that all changed in the early sixties with the advent of BP Viscostatic and equivalents from Esso, Mobil, Castrol and Duckhams.

Austin had their service schedule as, change oil after first 500 miles (They had a special running in oil) then at 3,000 mile intervals, filters at 6,000 miles, at 12,000 mile intervals you were supposed to remove the sump and clean it out, with Viscostatic they were at 12,000 still as clean as the day they were fitted.
