Towing

Post by StuStu »

Morning, I have a C5 2.0 hdi VTR estate auto on a 06 plate, I have been looking at max tow weights, the same car on a 05 plate, and the same car on a 07 plate both have higher max towing weights with the 06 with a max of 1300kg as far as I can figure out, can anyone shed any light on this please,

Also the auto seems to have lower weights ?

Make sure you avoid, if you can, reversing a braked trailer. The DMF does not like them.

Have you actually referenced your car's VIN plate - as they're the only weight limits that matter.
A guide on how to interpret it is here:

Thank you for the info, I just find it puzzling that above car has a tow limit according to the vin plate weights limits as a 1000kg
According to Citroen customer services who I rang is 1300kg, both seem low compared to kerb weight etc, same model cars a year either side is much higher, thanks in advance , Stu

The auto version will have a lower towing weight as the overall weight of the car is heavier.
The 4WD version of the VW T5 transporter can actually tow less than the FWD version, this is because the extra drivetrain gear increases the overall kerb weight.

My car is the same as yours, a C5 VTR 2.0 HDI 138 Estate with 6 speed auto. I have the handbook in front of me now.

10-12% incline 1100Kg
8-10% incline 1150Kg
up to 8% incline 1200Kg

All subject to being inside the gross train weight 3174Kg

Trailer weights can be increased by 400Kg provided that the vehicle load is reduced to stay within the gross train weight.

This is all for braked trailers

Plus the usual cautions
- avoid towing a very heavy trailer/van with a lightly loaded car
- keep nose-weight (towbar downward load) to car's specified figure (usually 50-100kg)
