China's Car Companies-What do you know?

Unread post by NewcastleFalcon »

Here's the top 10 largest according to Wiki
Beijing Automotive Group, BYD, Guangzhou Automobile, SAIC Motor
Dongfeng Motor Corporation, First Automobile Works, Chang'an Motors
Brilliance China Auto, Jianghuai Automobile, Chery
The answer for me is very little, but are they set to have the biggest worldwide influence on the automotive indusrtry?

I am keen for one to find out a little more :-D so here's a thread to deposit your knowledge, and news that you may come across.

Probably quite off topic for the French Car forum, but I dont see France as leading a revolution in personal transport!, or the UK, and probably even less so Germany and the US, and japan...have they had their day?

very little, except that the Chinese seem to own a heck of a lot these days.... will be interesting to learn more.

I was recently at the Coventry Transport Museum, which is very good by the way, and was saddened to realise how little of what we once had in the UK remains..... I hadn't realised that PSA shut their Ryton plant 10years ago.

Thats already unearthed something I didn't know produced by one of the top 10 Chinese Automakers,
SAIC Motor – a fortune 500 companybased in Shanghai – are responsible for bringing LDV back to life in 2011and making it the brand as we know it today. In 2014, SAIC produced close to6,000,000 vehicles for the domestic andexport markets, ranking it as the 7thlargest vehicle manufacturer in the world, producing vehicles for international brands such as VW and GM, along withits own iconic brands – MG and LDV.
Ask the general british public "Is MG a British-owned brand" what would they say? Well to be fair those in the know would probably say "not" seeng as most of the brands that people traditionally think of as British, are owned by non-uk companies.

Born in Norfolk, Brand owned by Geely, the same Chinese company that owns Volvo, and London Electric Vehicles (ie the black cab firm which used to be LTI)

My brother worked for LDV, he was a shop steward and I told him repeatedly that the way he was behaving would send the company into bankruptcy. :)

I have come across Dongfeng before, and bang on topic with the FCF, as well as the compulsory Joint Ventures with Chinese Car Companies to manufacture and sell cars into the Chinese market, Dongfeng hold as big a stake in PSA as the French Government do!

The wiki page on the joint venture company DongFeng Peugeot Citroen gives a bit of history and models produced

Great Wall got a mention on the SUV thread by Van Ordinaire. Never come across them, or noticed them before, but they are China's major manufacturer of Pick-ups and SUV's
http://greatwallmotor.co.uk/

Great Wall is one of China’s most successful automotive manufacturers. Established over 30 years ago, Great Wall has become China’s largest producer of SUVs and Pick-up trucks. And, is the only privately owned Chinese Automotive company to be listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.
The dealers are pretty widespread across the country with a bit of a desert in NE England with the nearest ones being Middlesborough or Perth in Scotland so thats probably why they are a rarity around here.

Interesting that the recently posted YouTube video about up-and-coming Electric cars (as possible rivals to Tesla) made absolutely no mention of the many Chinese companies who already have them (along with buses, vans, trucks and taxis) in production. Industrialisation and hi-tech doesn't stop at Stuttgart and Wolfsberg, someone should tell them. They could well learn the hard way.

Yes Chris, not that I am ever likely to trouble the scorers on a new SUV or pickup, but before Van's post I had no idea that Great Wall actually existed. They appear to have a very decent UK Coverage, and if they hit quality/ price/reliability and value for money they are going to grab market share. Where Buses/Taxis/ Pick-ups and SUV's from China are already here, EV's will inevitably follow.

At least the FCF should be on the ball!

Only seen one Great Wall, at a filling station near me.
Had a word with the driver and he owned the dealership in Chester-Le Street.
Didn't seem as grim as they are usually portrayed, for an ugly SUV.
