Handbreak light on after front barings changed
Hi all I've had both front barings changed today and as soon as you start driving each time you switch on the handbrake light comes on I always assumed this was a break fluid warning but it's topped right up has anyone got any ideas as far as I know it's a non abs it's a 2005 furio but I have no abs light on the instrument panel or the magnetic teeth at the back of the wheel usually associated with abs any help welcome and appreciated

Re: Handbreak light on after front barings changed
Can you post a pic of the light? Also not clear, does it come on at key on, or just when you start rolling? If you post up the last 8 digits of the VIN we can check for ABS etc - even if it doesn't have ABS it might use a pick up in the bearing for the speedo - does that still work? If the bearings have a mag track in them and you don't realise, it's a 50/50 chance of getting them in back to front....

What car is this on ? your profile shows an 02 Xsara Picasso but the thread just says a 2005 furio ?
There cant be many 2005 cars without ABS ?

Hi thanks both for answering it's a c2 furio the speed still works and it is the circle with the exclamation mark (handbreak) light that comes on it initially goes out when the handbrake is let off but once the car moves it comes back on and stays until turned off the engine again and the speedo is working properly thanks I'll get the vin

Re: Handbreak light on after front barings changed
There is a handbrake switch (number 4 in the diagram) - is it possible this is faulty and gone over sensitive? It may be that going over a small bump is enough to cause the switch contacts to come on intermittently... You could try putting a little electrical contact cleaner in there or checking that the wires are secure.

Re: Handbreak light on after front barings changed
I know nothing of C2's but these lights usualy/often double as low pad warning lights & given the recent work that has been done, that seems the more likely area to investigate.

Re: Handbreak light on after front barings changed
On some vehicles, the handbrake warning switch requires tension from the handbrake cable to pull/push the switch into the off position, and the light will stay on if the cable is totally slack.

Re: Handbreak light on after front barings changed
These C2s don't have any brake pad warning lights and the handbrake works on the rear brakes on the C2. For models on the 'C' series passenger vehicles (excluding the C15) that have the brake pad wear indicator (which operates on the front discs) - there is a dedicated warning light Van.van ordinaire wrote: ↑11 Feb 2018, 08:44 I know nothing of C2's but these lights usualy/often double as low pad warning lights & given the recent work that has been done, that seems the more likely are to investigate,
@ Webo83: The rears can have discs or drums depending on year / model - so we would need to know which you have if you want the handbrake adjustment guide - post up or PM your VIN.

Re: Handbreak light on after front barings changed
Hi all thanks for reply mine has the rear drums which have just had new fitting kits in while rear bearings were being done the front pads were also changed less than 200 miles ago the handbrake light actually goes out when dis engaging the handbrake but as soon as the car goes over 10mph it kicks back in only since front baring changed this has happened it must be some sort of sensor as each time the engine is turned off the light goes back out at handbrake release and aging comes on at around 10mph this is the vin VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]
97236795
And thank-you all I've got a motorway trip planned in the week and are quite worried about taking it as I have no idea if I'm going to have some break failure or something

Re: Handbreak light on after front barings changed
How do I find out if I have abs on the car is there a way to find out I know older cars had the toothed rings behind the wheels but I think newer cars don't use those now from what I've read but it's a lot of conflicting information out there

Re: Handbreak light on after front barings changed
The best way to find out would be to post up your VIN here, so that somebody with the ability to access the Citroen database can let you know what your car had when it came out of the factory. However, I would be surprised if your car did NOT have ABS.

Re: Handbreak light on after front barings changed
We have your VIN now - but it is incorrect - you missed out the 7
Anyway you do have ABS (TEVES MK70).
I think you are referring to a 'Phonic Wheel' that was the older systems fitted to the driveshafts - those are the older passive types and are no longer used on the C2.
There is more on the system here if you want a look at how they repair them:
