dispatch HDI 2.litre Coolant guage not working now!

2001 Citroen dispatch 2 litre hdi.
Its just recently played up.
Temp gauge-- sometimes nothing happens with ignition on , on the other hand when ignition switched on, temp goes to max then off, then thats it '

I have changed the thermo and green thermo temp switch.

Now ignition on- temp goes up and down twice then nothing?
Whats the fix please?
Van runs sweet and always a nice cool water temp ( When gauge worked)

Sounds to me like it could be an instrument failure, but not knowing a great deal about the more modern stuff I could be a way off & it may be a wiring issue. Have you confirmed that the sensor is the one that operates the gauge, and that the new one is indeed working and making good contact with it's connector?
