Possible purchase 07 plate C5 2.2hdi hatchback VTX+

Post by xantiagreen »

Hoping to buy a C5 and have looked at a few and like the idea of a 2.2 with 170bhp, tax is the same as my xantia and insurance only bumps up by another £40. Are they single or twin turbo, and what's recommended cambelt interval it's done 100k. Are the satnavs any good and is it possible to update them to the most recent version.
Will this have a dmf, any other things i should be worried about with a C5, or is a 2.2 mark 3 exclusive a much better choice in terms of reliability, comfort, parts, labour costs and changing bulbs. Will only ever be used mostly as a city car with the odd motorway journey, just need a bit more power and room than the current xantia, like the idea of a the 170 being chipped up to 220 without mods.

Thanks in advance.

  • DPF: Yes it will have a DPF
  • Sat Nav: The only Sat Nav Options are the RT3 and RT4 on the MK II - they are 11 years old - and yes maps are available. Don't expect Bluetooth, but if this has the RT3 or RT4, it will have an internal telephone and require an older SIM card to operate. Also bear in mind with the MK II that many configurations and options for the vehicle are undertaken via the Head Unit and Large Colour Display ECUs - so don't expect to be replacing the audio unit as it is very much integrated into the car on this model, so consider that. I've had these and they are great - although the voice interface sounds like she's 5 parts to the wind.
  • Timing Belt: Every 160,000 miles or 10 years
  • Turbo: If it has the DW12BTED4 (which it will likely be given the lateness of the model), then yes it will be a twin turbocharged engine using two fixed geometry turnochargers
Driving - big diesels are not really suited to city driving or short start / stop journeys, they are typically cruisers and love open roads and motorways. Expect to replace the Particulate filter at about 120,000 miles (by the book) - or have it extensively cleaned - it is not so much the soot as that can be cleared via regeneration - but the unburned Cerine that stays in the ceramic filter that will block it at end of life - but there are now good cleaning kits on the market.

Bulbs - much easier than a MK I - but will also depend on whether you have directional lighting with bi-directional xenons as an option. With the Xenon option on the MK II, these have a main beam halogen light and a D1S discharge bulb with projector lens. Both can be changed easily as can the 5W5 sidelight bulb. Rears are easy too - 2 screw and the rear clusters come away and bulbs are pretty easy to change.

If you are going to 'tune' the car - notifying insurance is a must or you don't have insurance - simple as that. If you do tune it and are getting a manual, make sure the clutch and Dual Mass Flywheel are in good shape as the extra power will put additional strain those components.

Only a small note. I own one of these. They are a great car for the money. My only gripe is it looks like I,m going to have to write the car off for the sake of a engine mount bracket fork which has broken. Impossible to find as citroen stopped production of the part which I can't find in scrap yards either. So bear this in mind as it seems the DW12BTED4 ENGINE comes with reserves...
