Xantia Rev counter

Post by daviemck2006 »

Today I swapped the battery between bigpug and Gabby as big pug was down on power just through not being used as it’s not sorted out yet. I had to jump start Gabby, the battery that was on big pug is date stamped feb 2017 so it was new when O bought the car and is the exact same rating etc. The thing that has happened is gabbys Rev counter now no longer works, it’s pointing straight down. The car has been ran all night now and is charged. Could having put on a discharged battery then jumping it have caused this? Would disconnecting the battery cure it? Or is it just a coincidence that the Rev counter gave up?

You need a thin piece of wire to push into the dial and flick the needle back round. They spasm and go all the way round when you have an iffy battery!

Sometimes, with very spirited driving - which moves the needle toward the red - it will resolve itself..

Odd that this is a problem exclusive to the S2 - the S1 never, as far as I know, ever suffered from it...

Also try a fisty (but sympathetic) thump to the instrument pod. Been known to dislodge stuck pointers and odometers.

A "sympathetic" smack on the instrument pod did not help it. This was standard practice on b10 Paxton Volvo when I drove for stagecoach when the instruments went off and you got the ping ping warning every 2 seconds. One driver was so sympathetic he broke the dashboard! I shall need to go find a bit of suitable wire then. Or I could let shaun drive it to give it some spirited driving??????????? Note I am questioning that lol. I want to keep my engine running!

Shaun does not appear to be sympathetic to ANY mechanical objects. PATHETIC in maintaining them, maybe, but not sympathetic in using them.

He is definitely not sympathetic in using cars. The maintainable side, the 107 was serviced every 8 to 9000 miles, by him mostly without any telling by me. I did it twice, he did about 7 or 8 services on it. The problem was him not checking the oil regularly recently knowing it was burning oil. Couple a lack of oil along with hard driving and its no wonder it went bang. He doesn't get my cars unless I am in them.

If Gabby is an S2 Xantia you can take out the instrument panel without having to remove the steering wheel. That might be a way to sort it (as well as checking for any blown light bulbs).

No, she's an S2... She once was mine so I speak with great certainty on that

James, indeed, a great aspect of the S2 is the ability to remove the clocks without needing to remove the steering wheel :D

It is actually a very easy job compared to the S1... I'd say it takes around ten minutes with practice...

Be aware that the Haynes BoL 2nd edition is wrong for the explanation on taking the instrument panel. They have copied and pasted the instructions from the 1st edition BoL. They did the same for the front fog lights as well.

I know she was once yours Jim :-D - I had a quick look on your website but I'm guessing those are different ones - looking at the grilles the S1s I'm sure had the older chevrons.

That's a good point James!

That one Marc, if it's P756 OPV you were looking at, is Zel's Activa before it acquired its private plate...

Trouble is, I've had so many Xantias now it's hard even for me to keep track of them all

She's definitely an S2. This is where the rev counter is stuck

Those previous threads say pull the needle towards the rest position. Surely it needs pushed so it gouge all the way anti clockwise round to the stop at zero? I haven't found a thin enough piece of wire to get in yet, and the trip reset button is not pulling out as someone said.
