fair comment by Bobins there, about Recycling Plants, but in my view the whole idea of recycling is a bit bizarre when its so much easier to just re-use...... until the factory gets successfully sued over a damaged bottle or similar.

I remember a number of years ago on one of our trips to Germany, having topped up our stock of Drinking Water with a couple of 1 litre bottles of water, we took advantage of the 25cents return on plastic bottles

...making a profit of 8cents, the water had only cost us 17cents initially.

But again, those recycling operations will still be needed to recycle the stuff returned under a deposit scheme - and their funding for that will presumably come from the companies responsible for the contents of the bottles and cans...

Indeed so, but plastic bottles and glass collected by the shops under the deposit scheme will, presumably, go straight to the recycling broker who will find a buyer for it and pay the shops for it, completely missing out the local authority recycling plant in the process.
The function of a local authority recycling plant is to sort the 'waste' out into their different materials, then sell the recyclate to a broker.
If the deposit scheme takes off, then presumably central Government will also have to lower the volume targets it imposes on local authorities.
No wonder there's going to be a consultation on it

The return of the deposit on drinks bottles had me recalling the Pop Man who used to deliver all around the North East.

In our area we had the Co-op, and Villa from Sunderland and Grays from Spennymoor, and Woods from Durham PopMan wars!

So do you remember your pop man....(yes you will have to be of a certain age)

I spent countless happy Saturdays sat in the passenger's seat of a Bedford TK 570 as a delivery driver's mate for a builder's merchant when I was still at school. On rare occasions I was allowed to tip the tipper using the Edbro hydraulics - clutch down, PTO in, tipper up. Happy days

It was Corona down our way and I have many happy memories of going and getting a bottle when down at the seaside as a special treat and then getting a few pennies back when I'd drunk it...

Those few pennies went straight back into the shop till in exchange for a few sweets ...

We were never allowed to have Corona at home...

I always remember feeling a real man when drinking Corona shandy and just how red and gooey the Corona cherry was It must have been well stuffed with artificial stuff

A few posts back Jim commented on litter picking, I read a report this morning saying that Germany, after seven years of their deposit scheme running, had found that it made absolutely no difference to the littering problems.

It seems that people in general are keen to recycle but litterers don't give a damn about the deposit.

As I undertsand it, the introduction will be some time in the future, while they work out how to do it. They are, presumably, ministers - which highlights all that's wrong with how things are done now. Remember how it took years to decide how to utilise the old Eurostar facilities at Waterloo, because it was a ministerial decision, not a railway operational one.

Golden opportunity for Lidl & Aldi to steal a march on everyone - by simply installing the equipment they've got everywhere else in their shops here.
