Xantia S1 MOT Fail

Afternoon all,

The S1 failed its MOT yesterday. Nothing to serious. ABS sensor, one snapped (yes! snapped!) nearside handbrake cable and offside steering rack gaiter.

Wanted to get the work done on it today but my PC with Lexia on will not start. No charge and although supply is giving out 19V, it's simply not lighting up anymore! Might have to strip and check mains connector on motherboard. A job I could do without.

A great topic on here about ABS allowed me to check pinouts and diagnose N/S ABS sensor so one is awaiting collection from GSF.

However, my mate's garage is some 15 miles away and I would like to know when I plug in N/S sensor will the light on dash automatically go out on a Series 1? If not, it means I have to fix the Lexia too! He said, you might find that it will go out because the ECU might just check resistances.

I'd love to know as it could potentially save me a wasted journey. Don't want to get up there do the work and him still fail it for the light being on!!

Also, the handbrake cables, I decided to do both. Are there length problems like the S2 ones I replaced on Sylv's Xantia back in Sept?

And finally, do I need to add lubrication to the ram on the offside steering? I assume it must be lubed by green blood when the system is powered up?

AFAIK, the ABS ECU will perform a self-check on ignition/startup then perform another sensor check once the car reaches about 15mph or so.

If all is well (according to the ECU) you should see no ABS warning light.

This from my own experience of fixing failed wiring to a rear sensor on a MK1 Xantia.

Currently, I now have my Lexia laptop stripped down trying to diagnose why it won't start on power supply or no lights coming on at all. Power supply 100% OK.

Car repairs now for tomorrow.

Does MOT Expiry of 11/01/2018 happen at 00:00 or 23:59 on 11th?

23:59 and 59 seconds more or less - in either case anything after 00:00 is the 12th! - I guess this is going to be a zero hour MOT rush for sure then

That's mine too although I believe the fault will remain [harmlessly] recorded in the ABS ECU until cleared using ELIT/Lexia...

Fingers crossed that it all goes according to plan as Lexia laptop is very possibly kaput. It hardly gets used and I can recall the pain of installing Lexia!!!!

Handbrake cable woes only come about if it is a V6, 2.0T or 2.1TD in MK 1 guise - all the others use the standard length cables. The steering rack boot should not need any lubrication - you could put some grease on it if it looks dry. There will be no LHM in there (or at least there shouldn't be!). At least it's the 'easy' side!!

So I'm said Richard! I am pretty sure the hard side may go soon enough.

Is there any way to aid longevity? Some kind of rubber protector fluid?

Funnily enough I look at steering rack prices yesterday and couldn't believe you can a rack for 1.9TD for around £35!!!!

I'd have though they would be a lot more expensive. Pretty sure it would be a horrendous job to change though.
