The better c5 engine

Post by Bandit12 »

Morning guys, firstly Happy Christmas to you all :)
I'm buying a new c5 x7 diesel estate and notice there are 2 versions of the 2 litre engine. The 140 bhp n 160 bhp. Any difference apart from power? Is one to be avoided?
Any advice is moist welcome

The DW10BTED4 - 140 variant is a good all round engine. The later 160 variation came out in several tweaked versions to meet new Euro standards. I've listed the main changes over the 140 engine at the end, but as you can see there are quite a few variations in tax bands, which I've listed against each engine and whether Manual or Auto:

Tax Emissions Info

The DW10BTED4 Manual
2.0 HDi 16V Exclusive (140 bhp) £190.00 (153 Band G)
2.0 HDi 16V Exclusive (138 bhp) £190.00 (157 Band G)

The DW10BTED4 Auto
2.0 HDi 16V Exclusive Auto £280.00 (189 Band J)

The DW10CTED4 Manual:
2.0 HDI 16V Exclusive (160bhp) (1 Mar 2011 - 30 Jun 2014) £115.00 (129 Band D)
2.0 HDI 16V Exclusive (160bhp) (1 Apr 2010 - 28 Feb 2011) £135.00 (139 Band E)
2.0 HDI 16V Exclusive (160bhp) (30 Nov 2009 - 31 Mar 2010) £150.00 (147 Band F)

The DW10CTED4 Auto:
2.0 HDI 16V Exclusive (160bhp) Auto (1 Jul 2011 - 30 Jun 2014) £190.00 (163 Band G)
2.0 HDI 16V Exclusive (160bhp) Auto (30 Nov 2009 - 30 Jun 2011) £240.00 (179 Band I)

In addition to the modifications over the DW10BTED4, the engine is Euro 5, so has new pre-heat plugs - they are metallic and ceramic low-voltage to withstand the increased engine temperature and the low compression ratio linked to a more rapid preheating and therefore complying with the Euro 5 standard.
  • A new Cylinder Head top with integral EGR module
  • It has a new MAF designed for Euro 5 to give about 99.5k miles lifespan.
  • There is a double pneumatic air mixer
  • A different Air Filter
  • The Diesel Fuel filter has been relocated for compliance with High Speed Impact.
  • Piloting Electrovalves Mod: The integral vacuum reserve is linked directly with the control electrovalves.
  • New Diesel Injection Circuit: The pressure in the fuel high pressure injection circuit is kept at 2000 bars in order to improve the time taken for the temperature to rise and to favour the starting capacity, (compared with 1600 on the DW10BTED4).
  • A different Exhaust system (Euro 5)
  • Different Engine Mounts
  • A different Vacuum system to account of extra engine weight (additional braking burden), the braking and the engine vacuum circuit are separated,
  • They have also modified the cooling fan to a 'sucking type' to account for the extra temperature under the engine resulting from the Euro 5 mods.
Here are the Modifications (In relation to the DW10BTED4 engine)
Components:
  • New integral engine top (HMI)
  • Electrically-controlled exhaust gas recycling valve
  • Exhaust gas recycling (EGR) heat exchanger
  • Pneumatic exhaust gas recycling heat exchanger bypass flap
  • Exhaust gas recycling (EGR) with exchanger and by-pass at the front instead of at the rear on the DW10BTED4 engine (make VALEO)
  • Exhaust gas recycling module (Valve and cooler cannot be separated)
  • Cylinder head with new combustion chamber (Type ECCS identical to the DW12BTED4 engine)
  • Variable flow oil pump
  • Variable geometry turbocharger without turbo pressure regulation valve (HTT)
  • Delphi 1.5 diesel injection system with high pressure circuit to 2000 bars
So these are just some of the changes - I haven't listed them all - but these are the main ones.

So basically, more power, cleaner emmisions and less road tax cost...
Sounds like the 160bhp is a clear winner to me!

Yep, it is to me as well.

Isn't there a later 140 or 145 bhp engine which is Euro 6 compliant?

Yes Paul, there were a range of later Blue HDi models; a 150 and 180 variant. You have to bear in mind looking at these below, that due to the new tax changes for registrations in 2017 the tax changed - so if looking out for one of these - the obvious one to go for is a model registered between July 2015 to March 2017.

2.0 BlueHDi 16V Exclusive (150bhp) (31 Mar 2017 onwards) £140.00 (plus a first year tax rate of £160.00) (111 Band G)
2.0 BlueHDi 16V Exclusive (150bhp) (1 Feb 2016 - 31 Mar 2017) £30.00 (111 Band C)
2.0 BlueHDi 16V Exclusive (150bhp) (1 Jul 2015 - 31 Jan 2016) £20.00 (106 Band B)

2.0 BlueHDI 16V Exclusive (180bhp) 4d EAT6 (31 Mar 2017 onwards) £140.00 (plus a first year tax rate of £160.00) (114 Band G)
2.0 BlueHDI 16V Exclusive (180bhp) 4d EAT6 (1 Jul 2015 - 31 Mar 2017) £30.00 (114 Band C)
