Any advice please on how to separate the Dog and Bone on the Height sensor C5 2003

Good afternoon from a sunny, well it was Mullion Cove Cornwall.

Before I start the replacement of the rear height sensor any advice please on how to separate the Dog and Bone : )

I have read that it is better to do it at the drop link end as the sensor is plastic.

Is it just a matter of prising between the two items ? C5 2003

It will be on ramps with the wheels chocked plus other safety measures.

I always remember the squashed gent on Beetlejuice : )

If you are replacing the whole thing then you may have to check and recalibrate the suspension height - the reference to pegging here I suspect is to keep the sensor calibrated for replacing it with the same part. Whatever you decide - I would mark the positions of everything to try and get it back to roughly the same position when the new one is fitted.

Disconnect the connector (5).
Disconnect the rod (6), as "d". (it's just like a cup and will pull off)
Peg the height sensor at " e" using a 4 mm diameter rod.
Remove :
The (7) bolt
The height sensor (8)

Refitting:
Refit the height sensor ( 8).
Refit bolt (7), Tighten to 0,4 ± 0,1 daN.m
Remove the pegging Bolt
Connect the connecting rod ( 6), as "d".
Reconnect the connector (5).

Thank you for that it is very comprehensive.

The pegging Bolt requires also fitting to the replacement unit.

Am I correct in thinking this to stop it sending incorrect signals to the computer.

If the plus was removed first when removing the unit, and was plugged in after the replacement sensor was fitted to the dog and bone, I cannot see that it would be required.

It could be that I am looking at things the wrong way ?

The procedure I referred to is for removing and refitting the same unit so peg the sensor to stop it moving and of course removing it when refitting. It won’t make any difference if you are replacing it with a new one, I just duplicated the procedure here for you.

Yes, its just a ball and cup joint. Can usually be easily separated with flat head screwdriver or two.

I was worried about breaking the post side off the anti-roll bar clamp, as I do not have a replacement for that part.

The fault is intermittent and does not effect the driving, but come the next MOT and up will flash "Serious Suspension Fault" : )

The up down switches also do not operate when the fault is present, though I believe that is not part of the MOT.

If the fault has occurred and I stop and park the rear is sometimes a little on the high side, so I am going to try the rear sensor first, it looks easer to get at as well : )

The pump is fine and can be started with 12 volts to its feed from the computer, even when the fault is present.

When the message first appeared some weeks ago it would keep popping up, but as time has passed it is less frequent.
