51 plate xsara picasso 2.0hdi exhaust

Post by Kevin Da »

Hello again,
My centre section of exhaust sprung a leak so I had just the centre section replaced .
The original one had a silencer on it between the rear silencer and the cat --- the new one is just a straight through pipe between the cat and rear silencer .
It doesn't sound any different or drive differently .
Any thoughts on this would be welcome please especially in regards to the MOT which is due in February .
Many thanks .

for the sake of £40 put it in now if you're worried. No-Brainer

Thanks for the reply -- looking at exhausts online it shows either for this model --it was only when I looked I realized there wasn't a silencer.
I queried it with the guy who fitted it and if I would have MOT problems..
He said the cat hadn't been replaced and this was the one on their supplier's system.
If either will be okay then I'll leave alone but confused as to what the difference is?(Apart from the obvious of no silencer)

Usually the first silencer in the system is an expansion chamber, second is usually the main muffler, and some cars have an additional one which is a deresonator. It's quite possible to roll these all into one large box too.

Shouldn't cause you any problems at the MOT so long as it's properly secured. It would only be an issue if there was no silencer in it due to excessive noise.

Any car with a turbo has most exhaust noise removed by that, in fact if you run one without an exhaust you would be surprised by how quiet it is, most of the energy that normally produces the noise is converted into power to drive the turbo so you get e fairly steady stream of exhaust instead of a lot of pulses. Works a bit like a smoothing capacitor (ask Jim)

Thanks everyone -- I'm getting the pipe with silencer fitted later today.
K

Edit: Replaced -- no extra charge !
Car is quieter -- didn't realize how much the exhaust had blown and a difference between no silencer and straight pipe .
Feel a bit better now -- thanks all.
Happy Christmas .
