'09 C5 high-level brake light.

Unread post by milleplod »

Quick query chaps! Having fixed the snapped wires near the tailgate hinge, I'm now waiting for a new light unit as the current one only has one or two of the LEDs working. When the brake pedal is pressed, the LEDs are flickering, sometimes they're on fully but still not very bright at all. Is this simply indicative of a failing unit (I've read about moisture getting into it and wrecking the circuit board), or is it something more ominous, such as another wiring fault somewhere?!

Can you feed it 12V with it detached from the loom to check the flickering?

It has been mentioned in some older threads that is is often the resistor(s) that fail and replacing them restores the unit to normal operation.

I'm now a dab hand at removing the rear spoiler - I did it again today, just for the sake of it! :-D - so I might give that a whirl tomorrow just so I'm not worrying about a non-existent loom fault! How does the light come out of the spoiler, I couldn't figure it out and was frightened of breaking something if I pushed/pulled too hard the wrong way!

It seems symptomatic of when there isn't enough resistance as Steve says - and may also be due to the other failed LEDs in the circuit - so I guess it depends how they are wired up.
Please note, I'm no longer active on the Forum, so won't respond to messages.

Couldn't say how you get access to the LEDs - mine is just bulbs so different from more recent models.
