2.2 and 2.7 litre diesel auto x7 C5s

Unread post by falling-out-with-my-car »

Hello, I was wondering if anybody on the forum owned or owns a 2.2 litre and or a 2.7 litre x7 c5 diesel automatic and what the real world fuel consumption figures are and reliability opinions are please? There doesn't seem to be a lot of 2.0l diesel autos about and being in the market for an auto I was considering perhaps widening my search by looking at bigger engined cars. Thanks in advance. Nigel.

Nigel,
I have a C5 Tourer 2.2 Hdi 200 Auto from 2014.

In the last year & 5000 miles my average economy on the trip computer is 36.1mpg.
I don't drive for economy, I like accelerating hard and cruising at high speed on motorways.
The previous owner had averaged 40.3 mpg on the trip over 6000 miles.
'Official' combined mg is 46mpg.

I have plenty of experience of the 2.7hdi in C6 which has a similar weight to the C5 with the same engine.
I averaged 33 mpg overall. Some drivers get 37-38, but they must be driving carefully and at slow motorway speeds. I got 38mpg in my C6 doing a long distance motorway drive sticking to 70mph.
Official combined is 32.5mpg and urban is 23mpg.
Citroen's published figures for the C6 are surprisingly accurate.
I hope this helps.

My 2.7hdi auto Pug 407 returns 38mpg. This is after being remapped. Before it was remapped it struggled to return 30mpg. It is usually driven enthusiastically.

Nigel my auto 2.0 163 I think averages about 45 .. which is better than anything I have had before..

. but

I don't bother driving it with enthusiasm on these roads ... which is a shame as I normally like to drive that way.. it's a very comfy economical cruiser and not suited to messing about on b roads .. I cannot drive it more economically than I do lol

Curiosity led me to experiment yesterday on my 60 mile motorway drive home.
Cruise on at 70mph, for most of the journey.
Cruise at 50mph through 10 miles of roadworks.
Engine was already warm when I reset the trip.
Average consumption was 53mpg.
Impressive for a 200hp car weighing 1900kg

The slightest whiff of a hill and watch it drop! My 140 gets me 43mpg in the mountainous hilly Welsh Countryside. On an excursion out on the flats it can get into the mid to high 50s.

Thanks everyone for that intuitive explanation. My mk2 manual 20.l diesel returns about 47mpg on a run and 38 round town. So not a lot between the 2.0 litre diesel engines of the manual and the auto on the 138 and 140. I think a 2.2 is definitely an option and I'll be adding it to my searches.. Thanks again. Regards. Nigel.

You can get some real world fuel consumption figures from the Equa website. It's run by Emissions Analytics - the company that's being a bit of a thorn in the side of the car manufacturers by actually testing the real world emissions of the cars they manufacture and claim are Euro 5/6 compliant etc :?
It's a bit of a clunky website and database to query, but it gets there in the end.

Have you not considered the 3.0 HDI x7 C5? I know they are rarer than the 2.7 but give better fuel economy and performance than the 2.7. I can get almost 40mpg out of it driving quite aggressively and more than 40mpg on a steady motorway run.

I would take 2.2HDi 205bhp anytime over 2.7HDi. It has same amount of power, but consumption is much much lower. And it's cheaper to maintain too. I'm not sure there's that much sense on 3.0HDi eventhough I drive one. 3.0HDi's max torque is same as on 2.2HDi because of gearbox limitation, so there's not that much difference on performance.

The 2.2 is 173 BHP, whereas the 2.7 is 208 BHP, and a V6. The 3.0 is 240 BHP and also a V6 in the UK so let’s stick to the published values to avoid confusion.

The later 2011 2.2 facelift got a new engine with 200 BHP along with a few cosmetic changes.

The other thing to consider is UK insurance groups for these 3 models range from 27 for the 2.2, 31 for the 2.7 & 35 for the 3.0 (insurance group 35 for the revised 200 BHP 2.2).

My c5 2007 (mk1 facelift, not x7) regularly returns 40mpg, if I'm a bit enthusiastic it drops to 36 ish. Not amazing but it is twin turbo and 173 hp. I drove to the south of France with a mate earlier this year and it got around 50mpg, not being driven hard but not particularly economically either.

2.2 173hp C5 X7 is always manual, newer 2.2 205hp is always auto. Here we're talking about autos, ain't we?

But it’s still only 200 BHP
