Xantia steering rack seal

Unread post by xantos »

Does anybody know the dimension of oil seal on steering rack? Not the gaitor used from XM (shown in the picture) but the one that prevents oil leakage from cylinder that is arrow pointed (like driveshaft seals...).

Image

Mine is weeping and I would like to change it.

The seal looks like this...

The only 'lipped seals' I can see is in the steering pinion valve (5 & 6):

It's this little bugger (end cylinder seal)...

Xantos, just measure the old one and buy a generic replacement from the many vendors of oil seals on the Internet... The seal will be nothing special.

Sounds like Jim's suggestion is the way to go, as I can't see the seal listed anywhere - and without a reference, it could be one of many on the general seals catalogue.

The whole Cylinder part (if it is 4005 A2 - and I would have to check from your VIN) is still available @ £229 excluding VAT in the UK - but if 4005 A1 - that is not NFP.

I believe the complete cylinder remains available as it was used over quite a wide range of PSA vehicles and still may be..

Agreed, but it's hard to measure without getting all messy :-D

I thought that maybe someone would know and I can order the part and when changing it get messy just once

Not that I don't like getting messy.

Messi Messi Messi... God Lord am getting bonkers from all that Citroen sh**. :rofl2:

Sadly not :( I keep hoping to get away with it every time but it never happens... As you say, the joys of Citroen ownership

It's all part of the fun   :)

Re: Xantia steering rack seal

Today I dismantled steering cylinder from a used steering rack that I have on stock (from TCT Activa). The first thin I noticed is that it is thicker than mine. About 28mm in diameter and mine is 24mm (1.9 TD non-hydractive).

But what I try to say is fu**** Citroen engineers. Look what those bas**** did. The seal is not changeable without cutting into the cylinder. The same thing as with activa sc.car cylinders... Oh well did try to cut corners that someone would know the dimensions of seal, but now I have another corner in front. Ahhh the joy! :-D

Was thinking... If I cut the strut carefully where it is shown in the picture, open it like a can, replace seal and then tap back the material do you think I would get away with it? 8-[
