Veg oil

Post by daviemck2006 »

Well today I have tried an experiment. Gabbys fuel down to 1/4, local tesco had rape seed oil on offer at 71p a litre. 15 litres put in with the 1/4 tank od derv, guage went to 1/2. I then went to work, and it was a busy night with 132 miles covered! Its amazing how the miles count up when there are a few orders from the outlying villages. It feels as if Gabby is running even better and smoother than before. She was quite agricultural at idle before and I am convinced that she is smoother. It may be wishful thinking! Has anyone ran a 1.9td on veg or veg/derv mix and thought it runs better? Im not going to go more than 50%, I think I will buy 25 litres veg and 25 litres derv and try a full tank. When I ordered a fuel filter for bigpug I ordered two for gabby! They are in the boot with a big enough tool kit and torch to change one in the dark at the roadside lol

I used to run my TD on 50/50 mix and I always thought it felt smoother. I was never sure if I was just imagining it though !

Did you have any problems running long term with a 50/50 mix? Derv is 123.9 a litre, so if I get veg at 71 then it saves a bit with the amount of miles doing. Thats cheaper than my boss gets his veg wholesale, but then he uses premium oil so he gets a good reputation

I've a TD fuel filter here I'll not need now Davie... Send me your address somehow and I'll pop it in the post to you, along with any other small TD bits I may still have ;)

I'd not exceed a 50/50 ratio of veg to diesel and even less once it gets cold...

I used to run my TD Xantias and XMs and one of my ZXs on straight SVO. Smoother, more economical, slightly more power. Drove many many thousands of miles on it with no problem at all.

It's worse for particulates than pump diesel though!

Davie, now I have your address I'll try to fill it for you... Mind you, that box is so big I could possibly squeeze a complete Xantia into it

Think of it as a Christmas present!

I ran 100% SVO for years, sometimes diluting with diesel in extreme cold. Considering it's thicker than diesel it's no suprise you notice a difference in performance as the injection system is set up at the factory for specific pressures and by running SVO may actually be compensating for slight pump and injector wear.

I didn't even dilute it with diesel. In the snow of 2005/6 I put a couple of litres of petrol in a full tank of SVO though

I ran mine td for years on whatever ratio I felt at the time ;) mostly straight! (used takeaway oil from Brighton area)

the only issues were all the cars behind me turning off for a burger king! (I jest)

and as Jim will testify, getting proper caught with a blocked fuel filter (8 hours in a layby in Winter!) carry a spare ;)

Been running TD S1 's on WVO for 10+ yrs 90k mls with great results. 90% wvo and 10% rug works best overall for me.
You'll need to replace the bulb hand primer....veg eats the rubber over time...I've fitted small facet type elec pump in its place, makes filter changing a breeze as well.
After a couple of fill ups the tank filter will need cleaning...the veg cleans all the yrs of derv crap out of the tank. and deposits it on the filter.
I fit a remote filter like this..http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Eckes-heated- ... xycmBS9ldF
without the heater, though you can heat if your in very cold area, here in North East not found it needed...Always had problems with standard filter set up letting air into the system.
I run pre 95 , all mechanical injector pumps so I can advance pump timing a little to help starting and found only Bosch Duraterm heater plugs stand veg long term.
Davey message me if you want a chat or can help any way...Derv is a dirty word in my veg book lol..oh and runs better on veg too

Does your takeaway shop sell the WVO Davie? Thought you would be using that?

I would get wvo for free. He has to pay to get rid of it, and as a popular chippy as well as the pizzas and kebabs he goes through quite a bit of it. Im just conditioning the car on a svo/derv mix before trying a wvo/derv mix. Ive got 3 filters down to 5 micron so going to rig up a filter station in the shed. I would be happy running it 50 50 derv wvo mix, that will 1/2 the fuel cost, if theres no problems.

That's the way Davie. A few 45 gallon drums with filter socks and time to settle. Will be a great tool that Xanty.

And a great pile of scrap if you aren't ever so cautious with the preparation and use of WVO
