Citroen C5 2.0i 16v oil consuming???

Post by thundermaster »

Good day to all,

Citroen C5 2.0i 16v 2006 oil disappeared!

Many things to be suspected

Installed Auto Gas Unit (STAG QNEXT plus 10.000 kms ago)

239.000 kms on board.

"Engine oil pressure too low" and the dipstick showed nothing ( 0 ).

Took about 4,3 litres of 10w40 synthetic after 10.000 kms of the last oil change 3 months ago

BUT

The plastic top end of the engine with the oil fill cap (and so the other plastic top end at the back of the engine) lose oil (known issue, tried to fix a year ago with a flanger-glue to avoid replacement - they are expensive and the Citroen doesn't sell the flanger separately in this engine -RFJ-), the alternator swims in oil, service says that this doesn't excuse the oil disappearance, tomorrow I have to go back to the service as they say they want to lift the car to see whats going on under, however I already lift the car in a gas station and no signs of oil loss under.

The car rides happily without any issue of power loss or something else.

Any thoughts? Thanks

Hi, check if the exhaust pipe is clean or dirty and if the engine is eating oil the smoke should be blue. Also if the oil pressure is too low it means that the engine has wear but the guilty parts for oil consumption are piston segments and valve seal.

Head gasket could be leaky. Gas conversion can give head issues. Hard to believe that the oil was at full after last service Did you check it?
If not wanting to spend money, I would use some thicker oil meanwhile.

Yes, the oil was at full, the replacement was done in front of my eyes, and took almost five litres of Castrol Magnatec 10w40 three months ago (and 10.000 kms before), also checked with the dipstick. I suspect the leakage from the plastic top ends of the engine, but I m not sure, the spark coil with the spark plugs swims a little bit to oil, however I didn't see any leak under the car.

My wife's 2005 2.0i C5 (103,000 miles) is the same! It's the non-direct injected 16v version.

Very thirsty on oil and it became worse when the top rocker gasket started leaking. Usually, it goes through 500-750ml of oil per 1,000 miles. The plugs are not oily, the emissions are fine, the headgasket has not gone and the coolant remains nice and red. When I follow the car, there's no blue smoke coming from the exhaust.

As the poster said, you cannot buy the rocker gasket separate, just the whole rocker box, the price for the pair is around £200!!!!

I stripped, degreased and refitted them with a flange sealant and it seems to be working so far.

I changed the oil from 5W40 to 10W40 in the summer which made very little difference.

I wouldn't expect the change from 5W to 10W to make any difference - it just means that the oil will get rather more viscous in cold weather. Changing from SAE 40 to 50 might help ( but not necessarily recommended).
