2005 C5 estate Hydraulic LDS fluid change @ home

Post by x_XP »

I need to replace leaking return line hydraulic hose in the real suspention and decided to drain and replace LDS fluid at the same time
I am familiar with procedure and have most tools for this job, I need to do it at home as I can not find mechanic to do it for me in time for my coming 2000km trip.

Can someone give me some tips please?

Can this job be done without a hoist?

When car is lowered and depressurised it sits almost on the ground.
I need to change return hose first before taking wheel off and arch mould off to get to the tank to drain and replace LDS
Car sit to low for jack to fit under

Can this procedure to be complete using 2 ramps on the back?

Also will I need brake bleeder tool which I do not have to pressurise the tank to 0.5bar as per instruction?
When I depressurised system with Lexia to check LDS level before I did not use pressure tool, it seems that the car self bleed at the time I started the engine and lift it to drive position
Thanks Michael

To access the LDS reservoir it is likely you will just need to take off the engine bay cover on the side opposite from the battery. It is (if my memory is correct) only held in place with a few pin clips. To pressurise the reservoir I have read elsewhere on the forum that you can do it yourself if you have strong lungs. Make sure there is enough LDS fluid in the reservoir, and thoroughly clean around the top. Have the engine running, and height set to normal. Then seal your lips around the filler hole, and blow hard. 0.5bar is only 7PSI.

I would recommend putting the car on four axle stands, then depressurise.
Then I´d remove the right front wheel and inner wheelarch and drain the LDS.
After that change the return hose.

When refilling the system it is not super crucial to pressurise the LDS reservoir, but its good to do so.
I usually use a cooling system pressure tester to do this, but they´re pretty expensive about 150€.
On one forum someone fitted a normal tyre valve to an old LDS cap, and used a tyre inflator to put 0.5bar in the reservoir.
I have various repair handbooks and wiring diagrams for C5 mk1, Xantia, XM, Berlingo and C3 mk1.
I have Lexia/Diagbox (Sweden) and Servicebox/sedre

Thanks for your reply
I finished this job close to what you've described but noticed that front wheel return hose broke off at the pipe, so I pushed it back for now and it is 2.5 cm shorter.
After refill upon startup power steering pump was noisy so I blowed with my mouth into the tank for couple of seconds till pump was primed enough and then car went up without a problem.
