Early Mk1 Xantia alarm/ remote strangeness..

Unread post by aerodynamica »

Hi all, you don't hear from me much because Auld Katy the Mk1 Xantia has been so totally reliable but something changed.

It's a strange thing: the remote locking works and the deadlocks work on the second button as normal but now the indicator lights no longer flash 3 times on locking and the one time while locking. The red LED on the dashboard also no longer lights.

My guess is that the alarm is not activating with the infrared remote signal but that it is still working the locking.

Any ideas?

Is there some fuse that might have gone? which one - don't see any blown.

Maybe the ECU of the alarm has had a melt down but where is it located?

It's still doing this! a few weeks later I still find the remote locking works fine but the alarm does not turn on.

Hi Graeme,

IIRC the alarm ECU is located under the carpet under the front passenger seat. Very often these alarm/central locking issues are caused by the ECU getting wet/submersed in water which comes in under the scuttle seal of the windscreen on the LHS.
It might be worth uncovering the ECU and first seeing if it is wet. If so, dry it out then refit and test system.
Then check scuttle seal and seal if necessary as the water runs under the seal, into the fresh air vent and into the car...

Thanks Glyn, that does help. I'd heard this before but couldn't recall where the ecu was said to be hidden..

Graeme, I've experienced just about every water leak there is on a Xantia... Not only that., I know all the fixes too ;)

They're not too scary really...

You want to get on to it due to damage the damp may potentially cause to the wiring and floorpan...
