Rear bumper trim replacement C5 X7
Is it possible to replace this without removing the bumper? Tried to pull the old one out but it's harder than I expected. Any tips?

Re: Rear bumper trim replacement C5 X7
Ok, so it's actually part 7 and 8 which are the trims. Parts 73 are the screws.
If you look at this diagram, this shows the bumper removed to gain access to the 3 bolts (2) and the clips (a) that hold the trim on. It would appear that to get to the screws and the trim clips, you will need to remove the bumper first, as these are accessed from the inside.

Re: Rear bumper trim replacement C5 X7
Don't think I will be removing the bumper. Was hoping it could be clipped in place on or at least i could access the inside of the bumper from underneath.

Re: Rear bumper trim replacement C5 X7
I'm guessing that the the clips marked 'a' are pushed in from the outside and then they expand open. So force-pulling them off from the front will likely snap them off. I can't say for sure whether the bolts also go into the trim from the rear of the bumper from any pictures I've seen. It's very hard to tell.

Re: Rear bumper trim replacement C5 X7
Hi OSX,
First thing, you do not have to remove the bumper. (I am just doing mine for the second time! as someone nudged me in a car park, the back clip broke so I removed it and repaired it. The repair broke so I bought a replacement trim from a scrappy for around £20
As others say, it is fixed with three torx T25 screws at the back and two snap-in clips so it will not pull off.
Lying under the car (easier if raised on the suspension) the fibrous underbody shield can be eased to one side by bending back the thin steel holding clip. I used a 90 degree ratchet drive to remove the screws. The two plastic clips can then be removed by pressing the lip upwards. Job done.
Fitting the new part is the reverse process. Takes literally 20 minutes max.

Re: Rear bumper trim replacement C5 X7
Good to know Mike, but would just like to add - ensure the car is supported by a jack before getting under and not to rely solely on the suspension.

Re: Rear bumper trim replacement C5 X7
too true! a point well made lest we forget ..... I just slide an axle stand beneath
I should have added, it is difficult to see the screws (so no real benefit in crawling right under) and space is tight for an ordinary screwdriver. My trick is the ratchet driver cupped in the palm of my hand with my index finger over the front and beyond the torx bit. It is then a case of "pointing" towards the screw until you find the screw head, slide the finger back a tad and your home. The screws are not tight so a gentle rocking of the ratchet a couple of clicks at a time and the screws are quickly out. (I wish the DRLs were as easy! ) They can stay on the bit once loose (or can be finished by hand) but if they do drop they are straight on the ground so no worries.
