206 fuse box wiring question
Hi. I have a 55plate 206 1.4 hdi sw. It turns but will not fire. In engine fusebox, fuse 8 keeps blowing as soon as ignition is on. When wire plug between fuse 15 and 8 is removed, (first plug top left) fuse does not blow. I assume these wires lead to the faulty component. Anyone know what it feeds?

I'd try unplugging the coolant fan first. Or you could probe each of the wires in the plug to see which has a direct short to earth; but that won't tell you where the fault is unless you've got a wiring diagram...

The radiator fan is the most likely culprit as they have a tendency to seize up over the winter months when they get zero use. Both my Xsara and Mk1 C5 had seized fans at various times and both blew their respective maxi-fuses.
As I get older I think a lot about the hereafter - I go into a room and then wonder what I'm here after.

Another vote for potential seized fan motor here, on our '02 without air con the fan has never come into play that I've witnessed, so when I got PP2000 working the other week I did an actuator test on it and boy what a noise! Half the time it'd run and make a horrendous shrieking sound from its dry bearings and the rest of the time would kick and then fail the test. Need to give it a look at soonest before we end up in the same situation.

Actually, scratch what's written above. Just realised the fuse in question is the 20A standard fuse not the maxi. In that case it can't be the fan motor itself causing the blow but perhaps a faulty relay? I'd follow Richard's suggestion of probing each wire individually looking for a low resistance to earth and then tracing it on a wiring diagram to see where the fault lies.

Thanks for the replies. After a lot of searching I finally found the maxi fuses. None are blown but some are different to my manual. The book says fuse 1, fan unit, should be 20A but has 50A fuse in it. No.2 ABS/ESP should be 60A but is 20A, No.3 should be 30A but is 20A. the others are all correct. I disconnected the fuel pump and fuse still blew, though I guess fault could still be in the wiring loom to it. I can't see how to disconnect the fan. Several years ago I had to strip the whole of the front of the car off to get to the fan relay as the box is between the bumper and the radiator and the wires in the box had corroded through as it gets a lot of water being at the front. I don't recall if there was another way to isolate the feed to the fan without accessing that box. I will get a voltmeter, then try and work out how to use it!

Hi. I have traced fault to this unit, highlighted by the green arrow. As least, the engine fires when this is unplugged and fuse does not blow. Anyone know what its called? Thanks

That looks like the MAF (Mass Air Flow) to me. Strange that that could blow a fuse.

Thanks! Now I know what to search for to replace it. Unfortunately I don't have wiring diagram to even know it this unit is connected to fuse8. Its possible, I suppose, two wires elsewhere in the loom are touching, causing the problem when current is fed to this unit.

Cheers. Have done eight journeys now and engine warning light still on. I thought from the forums that the computer doesn't need resetting, it will 'learn' and reset itself after about six cycles. We will see. Have an mot coming up so hope it clears.

If he light is still on after more than 5 or 6 restarts then the fault is not transient. You need to get the code(s) read and cleared and then see if it comes back.

I heard it was 10 ignition on/off cycles before it reset, may be wrong but that's about how many times to get rid of the EML after I was faffing with connectors on ours. Whatever the case it'd be good to see what the code/s are for so diagbox session would be recommended I agree.
