2.0Hdi EGR valve failure

Post by centurus2400 »

My C5 X7 is coming up to 70,000 miles and the engine, whilst in my ownership, has always run impeccably.
However, over the last few months I noticed an occasional slight hesitation and lack of throttle response when accelerating.
A few weeks ago it started fine from cold but then had minute or two of missing, and reluctance to rev, which then suddenly cleared and it was back to normal.
It then ran perfectly so I made the unwise decision to defer a visit to my excellent local garage.
This of course came back to bite me in the bum, as last week it stalled in the middle of the road junction outside my house and absolutely refused to start, though it cranked over fine.
Also, it came up for the first time with the dreaded 'depollution system fault' message. At this stage I'd have welcomed even limp home mode, but still no joy, so out came the lads from the garage and it was towed into their workshop-fortunately only a mile away.
Of course next day, it started and perfectly again....
They put it on the code reader and found fault codes relating to the injectors and the EGR valve. The injector codes cleared straight away but the EGR one didn't, so a new Delphi EGR valve was ordered and fitted.
It appears that the EGR valve was intermittently sticking fully open and preventing the engine from running.
It's all fine now though, so if anyone suffers from similar symptoms on their car don't leave it too long or you may well find yourself going nowhere fast

That's interesting, I've always been suspicious of EGR systems. At the very least when they fail they should fail closed and not open!

It's the 138 hp version.
Delphi fuel system, and so it would seem, a Delphi EGR valve.
The mechanic reckoned that all EGR valves give trouble sooner or later, but that the 2 litre Hdi was one of the more reliable ones!

I have the 163 hp version, RHH engine, and I know that the egr valve is different that the one on 138 hp engine. Also I have from time to time some kind of slight hesitation but only for some seconds when the engine is cold. I read on other forums that the electronic part is the problem and also the mechanical part because is becoming sticky, but I wonder ..if the vacum controlled egr can be cleaned also an electronic egr can be cleaned ? Is someone who tried to clean/repair the egr valve?

the 2.0 138 RHR also has an electronically controlled EGR. I believe a stepper motor is used to more accurately open or close the valve. If you suspect the EGR is at fault and staying open, maybe you could block it temporarily and see if the problem is cured?

I don't think disconnecting it would work as the flap may be mechanically jammed with soot.

Nice Jgra1, maybe when you will have some time to have a look at the valve. I found a movie on youtube where is shown the sticky valve from RHR engine and I suppose if the stepper engine and electronics are ok the mechanical part can be cleaned.
