C4 coupe wannabe, buying help request! :)

Post by TZ861 »

Hey boys and gals I was a former proud owner of an MG TF for 6 years. Yeah I know many had a lot to say about the quality of an MG but I was lucky and really had no trouble and enjoyed it. Now I am in the process of buying a 2005 1.6 VTR C4 coupe here in Germany, since I moved here recently. I went for a viewing and a test drive. I started the engine let it idle for 3-5 mins and then took off and it drives well and sounds good but on my return I noticed 2 oil puddles on the ground. He played dumb claiming he doesnt know about it but there are 4 or 5 dried ones around becuase that's the spot where he always parks but OK I give him a benefit of a doubt. We bent down to look and sure enough every 3 sec a drop falls in the upper middle part of the car but I think there is also a leak that came from the front and it looked oily on the engine too here are the pics.

He took the car to the mechanic today and says it's the Simmer ring from the transmission and it costs 150€ to fix. The gear stick is also quite stiff when I move it in neutral to the left and right. The other two cars I have test driven were smoother. Now is this a cause for concern and should I move on to find another or is it not a big concern? I love the looks of the C4, soo cool and sexy even after 12 years and would love to own one but I have to find a good example. I would be really gratefull for any insight or thoughts and I hope to join the family. TZ ;)

While I can welcome you to the forum ( :welc: by the way) I cannot advise you on the C4.

A c4 coupe is a lovely thing. Its the same as any other car, if its dripping oil and you can live with it or fix it and its cheap enough then its ok. If you have doubts, leave that one, another will turn up.

Obviously it's hard to tell from a photo, but the circled area at the front of the car looks just a bit damp not actually dripping and the dripping liquid further back looks to be the air con dripping.
