Strange rattling noise from intake manifold area

Post by Dommo »

Hey guys

I've just been for a drive in my C5. It has the 2.2 DW12 BTED4 173 biturbo engine, as fitted to some C6's, not the earlier TED4 engine. Normally after locking the car it makes some high pitched noises while some 'things' do their thing, however today it has decided to make an awful rattling sound, please see the video attached.

It sounds as though it is from the inlet manifold area although I can't be sure. For reference on this engine the EGR valve is around the back of the engine so I do not think it is the issue. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, as the car sounds absolutely dreadful.

Thank you, Dom.

A little more detective work narrows it down to this unit, it would appear to be called the Doser on service box.

Disconnecting it stops the rattle, and it still runs. Any suggestions on what to do with it? Thanks all.

The doseur is I think a divert valve which cuts the intercooler to help with exhaust temp for DPF regen - so whilst it might run OK at present, it might compromise the DPF regen. So, I think you'll have to replace. Post up the VIN and I'll find the part no, and see if it cross references to anything else.

The EGR on my 307 started making some nasty noises at shut down (but not as bad as that!) - I ignored it and it went away.... not sure you will be that lucky though!

It appears to be part no 0345F7 at £221.71. Also on X7, C6, C8 and C-Crosser, 407, 4007, 508, 607 and 807 so you might be able to find a 2nd hand one. Or £133 from GSF on e-bay

Thanks Richard, apologies about the slow reply but work has been a bit busy! I had a look on servicebox and found the price on there as you said at £221, too expensive for my liking!
So yesterday we took it off the car and took it apart to investigate, unfortunately a plastic cog inside had stripped. The throttle body wasn't particularly stiff, but I guess 10 year old plastic + a slightly stiff throttle body tipped it over the edge.

I couldn't find the part listed for my C5 from euro car parts for some reason, however when I put in a 2007 2.2 Mondeo which has the same engine, sure enough the throttle body popped up. Along with a 36% discount code I managed to get it for £109, and collected it within 20 minutes. Bargain! (in comparison to citroen prices anyway) Strangely enough on the throttle body itself there is a PSA code which is half rubbed off on the new throttle body, just to remove the PSA bit weirdly.

And finally... The noises the car SHOULD make.

Thanks for looking.

Apologies about the photos above, photobucket is being a nightmare lately. Any recommendations from anyone where I'm best uploading photos?

Hi Dommo, I hope you see this post.
I have exactly the same issue on my C8 with the same twin turbo engine and, like you, I had pinned down the noise to the air doser. I’d even started a thread on here about it before finding your post.
My question is, where did you manage to get the cheaper ‘Ford’ unit from and what was the part number etc.
Any tips on fitting it ? Also, did you find your engine didn’t turn off cleanly when the unit was faulty - almost like it was running on ?
Any advice would be most helpful - thanks in advance !

That's a completely different noise than was expected as per your other thread - having a video always helps identify the sounds, and had we had that, we would of been able to say that this wasn't a normal noise made when the car shuts down. Anyway, as you've tracked it down, here is the info you need:

Pop up your VIN and I'll confirm the part number, but if the 175 version, then it is part number: 0345F7. Current price from Citroen is £263.09 inc. VAT

Hi Marc,

Firstly, thanks for your help and I’m sorry if my description was misleading although I’d hoped that it summarised my situation reasonably:

“.....a slight high pitched whine from under the bonnet......all sounded perfectly ok until last few days when it’s been accompanied by a light clicking/buzzing sound - there all the time the ‘ignition’ is turned on - although maybe not once the engine is running ?
I searched and located it to the unit at the top of the pipe from intercooler into the inlet manifold and, thanks to Citroen service, I identified it as the air doser”
I also showed the page from Citroen service that confirmed the part number, as you say, is 0345F7.

I just hope that, as my noise is much less than Dommo’s then maybe I can rescue my unit and I’d be very interested, if he sees this thread, if he can offer any tips on removing or refitting it, even though it looks reasonably straightforward.

Thanks again Marc.

Ok, good luck - as with a lot of parts these days, the emphasis is on chuck it away and replace unfortunately! I think you'd be hard pressed to obtain specific parts like the gearing for these - the noise is probably less as it is in the early stages of wear - assuming you can confirm it is the same part causing the noise of course. You may be able to put some decent grease in their to prolong the unit, but if it has started to wear, then I think a replacement is likely.

You are, of course, quite right - a replacement is likely :(

Just like Dommo’s my gear was stripped. I just had a vague hope that I might be able to replace a gear to an unworn area - I’ve had luck like this a couple of times in the past and it’s a common practice on wiper wheel boxes on old British cars - but it was not to be :(
