206 2.0 issue

Post by jgra1 »

hi all, Swimbo's 206 packed up at lunch.. I just went to rescue it/her lol

the symptoms were a non starter on the key, complete with clock resetting to french days, and so on.. I dont know if the engine turned over or just clicked at the time.

I went to it, stricken near the Hop Farm for those that are local, and measured battery voltage, 12.4 - fine..

I tried to start her, and she turned over sluggishly but started after a few turns... will running I measured voltage at 14.4 .

that could all point towards a starter motor or a bad earth, although car has been fine for 2 years till today..
what I can't understand is now the car wont idle.. or rather, stall, 500rpm and the normal 900? rpm are all available..

I drove it home, stalled once and bumped, and otherwise the car was fine.. no light on, just this idle speed issue and the non starting..

I cannot make a link between the two things, no matter how I try!

PP soon, when I can, but any ideas welcome..

John

I'd suspect earths TBH, it's a known issue on the HDi ones at least for the main earth lead to fatigue due to insufficient length/bad routing and cause sudden non-start issues. I'd imagine a 2.0 would take some amps to spin over as well.

It could just be the bad connection causing interference with the idle control, or something's gone awry electronics-wise with the low voltage spike, I'd start by looking at the battery, making sure it's up to kicking out a decent current still as well as good voltage, then all it's leads/connectors both neg & pos before the obligatory BSI reset.

Once you're sure that's all in order hopefully it'll be sorted otherwise I'd look to the starter for the cranking speed fault & as you say, PP2k for the idle/stall fault.

battery voltage can be up but its CCA low (cold crank AMPS), which can lead to numerous issues.
Suggest getting the CCA checked and If your battery is old 5yrs plus replace, fully charge and confirm.
