C5 2009 2.0 hdi

Unread post by Grahambeveridge225 »

Hi guys. Been told that I have a slight judder from the clutch and flywheel on my c5.

Has anyone any idea on the size of job and the potential cost I'm facing?

Thanks

Hi and welcome to the Forum.
I had both replaced after the same problems - my technician was a long-time Citroen trained tech working from a non-main dealer garage at the time and I think clutch kit was cheapest from Citroen to buy and the DMF was sourced elsewhere - but labour rates then were about £50 an hour compared to £90. All in I think it was just under £900 for the complete clutch and DMF inc VAT & Labour. Likely to be more from a dealer.

The DMF was caught just in time as it was really loose and wouldn't have taken long to start breaking up and then it would of caused more damage. If you want Citroen Parts prices, just post or PM your VIN and I'll be able to let you know at least that part of it.

Welcome Graham

How many miles has the car done? Do you know what its driving history is?

The mileage does seem a bit on the low side to need a clutch replacement (or DMF replacement even), especially if a lot of the miles were on motorways. Still it's not unknown for the DMF to fail before the clutch, as witnessed by Marc's car.

Who has told you that you have a judder? Can you feel the judder yourself when driving?

I wouldn't jump to conclusions and blame the clutch and flywheel in the absence of incriminating evidence. Even then, if the judder is only slight, I personally wouldn't rush to change the flywheel and clutch given the relatively high cost. In my experience DMFs can judder away for years without getting any worse or significantly affecting drive. I would wait until you are sure it is the clutch/DMF, and until the judder becomes pronounced before changing.

Thanks guys. I can feel a judder slightly when I put my foot on the clutch and the noise goes when fully depressed. Thanks for all your messages

I think mine were done at about 45k. I had slippage in 5th and 6th, which got worse quite quickly. Advice is to do the DMF at the same time as the DMF will unlikely last another clutch. Sure enough the DMF was worn considerably. There was slight judder, but the slipping was the main culprit. Mileage and driving conditions will factor considerably and the previous owner had a tow bar fitted so I suspect towing did not help and is a DMF killer as is well known.

If that mileage is on the original I would be well pleased! Some owners (Ford, VW and others) have only had 25K or less in some cases, others a lot more.

That isn't exactly the typical symptom of a failing/failed DMF (although I am struggling to think what it could be a symptom of). A more common sign of a failing DMF is squeaking/judder when starting/stopping the engine and nasty juddering when taking up drive.

If that were mine I would be well displeased.

Maybe I'm living in the past but on my previous Mk1 C5 it had over 220,000 miles on the original clutch when I sold it. And it had a towbar fitted.

I changed the clutch and DMF on my Mk1 C5 HDi at 235k miles as preventative maintenance as I assumed it would be on its way out, but it wasn't. Friction disc was no more than half worn and the DMF, aside from a little squeak when starting and stopping, had no more play than the brand new one (and felt nearly the same as the new DMF).

What damage could be done if it gets looser?
