Xantia TD white smoke on the run
My 96 Xantia 1.9TD starting to have clouds white smoke especially when slow, in low gears, after idling or pulling away. It starts fine and idles fine too, maybe lower on power. Drinks quite a bit of engine oil and the exhaust smells oily, even when idling, can see a little stream of white smoke. My mechanic said either its leaking turbo seals or piston rings. How can I find out and are there any other reasons?

If it's white smoke, it's using oil, and the exhuast smells oily, you can be pretty sure that the seals have gone on the exhaust side of the turbo. Any oil getting into the combustion chambers would burn and cause blue smoke with that familar burnt oil smell. Sorry, but looks like you are going to have to get the turbo out and rebuilt!
