ECO stop/start

Post by ttellof »

My citroen c5 tourer diesel 1.6 2012 has started to go into ECO mode. It stated as I had the air conditioning on, this cut out, then whenever I was coming to a halt, it would cut out. I have to go though starting the engine every time. On the dash the ECO mode starts to flash.

When did you last change your battery ?

Remember to follow the battery change/bsi reset procedure ( To the Letter) if you need to disconnect the car from the battery.

Normally, the Stop Start function will be disabled (ECO Flashing) depending on several conditions, one being the temperature and if the A/C is working hard. It is odd that the car is cutting out though, as the Stop Start should not be engaging. So There may be another issues - and as Sticky says, you may need a new battery - especially if this is the original battery. It will be a specialist type of battery too, possibly an AGM type. Check the correct one for your car though. These Sop Start systems need this type of battery to provide the frequent starts, so will need to be replaced when they start to go. 5 Years is about the life for an AGM under this type of use.

Did they have stop/start back then? And even if they did does the OP mean that the engine keeps stopping and needs restarting? It's not clear to me what the problem really is.

thanks for the reply's. Only had the car for a couple of years so it may need a new battery. It was had a problem a few weeks ago with the injectors so I had them all replaced - lots of money. Wondered if the mechanic had taken of the terminals on the battery and something had happened to make it go like it has.

It is a distinct possibility.
Try the reset procedure and have the battery fully charged before reconnecting and your troubles may go away.

As Paul mentioned - are we understanding you correctly I wonder? Do you mean the car is cutting out and won't restart (in other words the Stop Start is stopping the car, but not re-starting it?), or are you saying the Air Conditioning is cutting out and won't re-engage until you restart the car?

when I brake to stop at traffic lights it cuts out. It turned of the air conditioning a little wile before that. It was like it needed more battery power for the running of the car. I think it may be the battery. Btw what is the reset procedure I'm new to this as you can see.

Yes, but that is by design on a Start Stop system - the car is designed to stop for example at the lights, but should re-start when you take your foot off the brake (if the right conditions are present). So I'm still not understanding what the issue is.

A few excerpts from the manual:

Stop & Start
Engine going into STOP mode: The "ECO" warning lamp comes on in the instrument panel and the engine is put into standby:

with the 6-speed electronic gear-box system:
at speeds below 4 mph (6 km/h), press the brake pedal or put the gear lever in position N.
In certain circumstances, STOP mode may not be available; the "ECO" warning lamp flashes for a few seconds then goes off.

Engine going into START mode
The "ECO" warning lamp goes off and the engine restarts:
- with the gear lever in position A or M, release the brake pedal,
- or with the gear lever in position N and the brake pedal released, select position A or M,
- or select reverse.

In certain circumstances, START mode may be invoked automatically;
the "ECO" warning lamp flashes for a few seconds, then goes off.

You can deactivate the system at any time by pressing the "ECO OFF" switch; the warning lamp in the button comes on. The system will re-enable the next time the ignition is switched on.

STOP mode is not invoked when:
- the driver's door is open,
- the driver's seat belt is not fastened,
- the vehicle has not exceeded 6 mph (10 km/h) since the last engine start using the key,
- the electric parking brake is applied or being applied,
- the engine is needed to maintain a comfortable temperature in the passenger compartment,
- demisting is active,
- some special conditions (battery charge, engine temperature, braking assistance, ambient temperature) where the engine
is needed to assure control of a system.
In this case, the "ECO" warning lamp fl ashes for a few seconds then goes off.
This operation is perfectly normal.

yes I know about the stop/start when you are at lights. but mine does not start up again when you put your foot on the gas pedal. So you have to take it out of gear, put it in neutral, put foot on the brake and turn ignition key to start again.

Ok, that's clarified the issue then. In this case, apart from a replacement AGM battery (I believe the replacement to be a L3-70AH-760A-AGM for your C5 - but do confirm this), I would get the system checked out, because the Stop Start system shouldn't really be engaging if the battery is in a bad condition. The system should also have an ultra capacitor, converter unit and a few other related bits for reclaiming energy.

Until you get a chance to get it looked at, I would hold the ECO button in to disable it at the beginning of each journey to stop it cutting out. These systems are a bit Carlos Fandango and I do not like them at all because of all the additional issues they bring, ditto for the 6 Speed Manual Piloted gearbox and clutch usually fitted to these eHDI models.
