1.6hdi questions.

Post by daviemck2006 »

I'm going to look at a 07 reg berlingo van, 137000 miles. It is described as engine management light on due to turbo issues, drives well but cuts out at 3000 rpm. It's very cheap, nothing much else wrong with it. Would this be the classic turbo failure, replace the turbo and pick up pipe filter then all should be fine. I'm looking for a cheap can to carry crap about tidying up my garden and building a car port between my housevand my neighbours house which was going to be my summer project.

I'd steer clear Davie. If the job is not done properly it will only last short while and blow again.

To my mind this sounds more like it's in limp home for some reason & maybe the turbo is fine. Only way really would be to inspect it in person & make a decision then. For my money, even being pretty capable with a spanner I think I'd still avoid the perceived potential for ballache unless it was indeed VERY cheap, and wasn't smoking. Then I'd be inclined to take a punt...

To do a turbo properly is quite an involved job, sump off, new strainer, turbo oil feed, flush etc etc.

CMIIW but the eml would only come on "due to turbo issues" if the turbo was passed the point of no return, in which case it would whistle like hell under pressure and the car wouldn't "drive well".

As already pointed out I would say limp mode and a session on Lexia to find out why.

If it's scrap price, and you are able to get your hands dirty, it might be saveable for a ton - the price of a new turbo core. Or it might be a money pit! Would need to see it, and the history, and get Diagbox on it to make a decision.

I went and looked at this and never even started it! One look was enough to say no thanks, even if it was free! Back axle buggered worse than the last one was so wasnt interested in it even wondering about the engine. Theres plenty of berlingo sized vans about with long mot and not any big issues for a few hundred quid to do my jobs over the summer then flog on for what i paid for it in a few months without taking on a scrapper which this one is. Granted she was only asking 300 quid for an 07 plate, but being an ex plumbers van in a previous life it had probably been overloaded every day of its life! Daughters a4 has towbar. An 8 x 4 trailer seems a better bet!
