C4GP EGS Gearbox Actuator Replacement and Teaching

Post by ianleehawkins »

hi all,

so i'm gonna start off by saying please don't scoff or laugh too much after i tell you what i did as i've learnt the VERY hard way about the EGS in a c4GP...

looking to replace a zafira we were looking at a couple of c4Gp one being a 1.6 vtr+ with all the toys etc (EGS, digital climate etc..) 12moths warenty 12 months AA and full M.O.T for £3200 but someone beat me to this so was very disappointing i missed out, so with money burning a hole i looked around again and found a 2.0 hdi exclusive again with all the toys and then some (pneumatic suspension tints and blinds) perfect! and also a steal at £1600!!! (DING DING DING) Only downside was the auto hand brake wasn't working as such but i'm sure that could be fixed within budget for sure right? .....
WRONG after buying it and taking it to Citroen they lightened my pockets by £620 for a hand brake cable and reprogram, two front tyres and a tie rod, and a couple of ball joints... (ouch) but i suppose it was a necessary evil. so all was hunky dory for about two weeks when all of a sudden "Gearbox Faulty" along with "Suspension Faulty" flashes up and car goes divvy chucking it into neutral every now and again and reverse disappears completely...also suspension goes into comedy mode and make us look like we're driving a clown car bouncing down the road.
try three different garages and after the laughter they don't want to touch it including an auto box specialist, fourth garage takes it and tells me that the suspension compressor has died and also the gearbox actuator is dead... cost to sort £3000!!!!! so reluctantly I've had to pay it as i didn't really want to get rid as i could of scrapped it bought another and gone through the same process again whereas i know this car has had it done and it'll (hopefully) not need doing again
so now to the point of this post.. the gearbox apparently needs to "learn" what to do again and Citroen has said they can do it for £180 which seems a bit steep. is there any way i could do it myself as i'm sure I've read somewhere it can be D.I.Yed

thanks for not laughing too much

My mate had one of these, and it nearly bankrupted him..... It's reg doesn't start AF56 and done about 125k by any chance....??

Anyway, Welcome along!

You can re-program it yourself, but you need Diagbox to do it. kit can be bought for about £120, and you need a non win10 laptop to run it on. You will need jump leads or a battery charger to do it as well - the battery on its own is not enough to allow it go through the motions.

Wow, I was just about to say that even with all the work you'll still be on the road with a higher specced car for £500 less than the first one you saw. Then I realised the last job cost 3 grand not 3 hundred

That seems mighty steep for just a compressor and actuator, unless maybe they were brand new genuine parts? I see them on ebay for about £550 compressor and £250 actuator/£650 complete gearbox :?

Sorry to hear you've been bitten with your purchase, and I'm sure nobody is laughing as we've probably all been there in one way or another. For my money, I'd invest in the Lexia/Diagbox kit from Easy Diagnostics since you can "teach" the actuator and then have the system ready to help reduce costs for any other issues you might have.

Welcome to the forum by the way, sorry it's not in better circumstances but hopefully we can help get you & the car back on track.

You paid £1600 for a car you thought you'd got on the cheap - and got stung.

You paid £3000 for repairs - and got stung.

And now you're moaning at £180 to make it work!

Penny rich, pound foolish comes to mind.

While the above may be true (and also does not amount to laughing at the man!) I think better late than never in that he's here now and there's potential, if the money is spent on Lexia, for further excessive costs to be kept to a minimum.
