Citroen Picasso poor starter

Post by imperial21 »

I have been trying to sort my step daughters Picasso, Its a 2004 2.0 hdi done 220k miles ex taxi but not bad really, but its a pain to start from cold it turns over and over and eventually fires, some days better than others ,, once started its fine all day. I have changed the glow plug and relay, the glow plugs where tested and where poor. the car has a new battery and turns over ok.

Is it turning over fast enough? This can be a problem with Hdi's due to a faulty battery or starter. If it is fast enough see if it will start on 'Easystart' if it does the fuel rail pressure is probably low, could be the fuel filter, pressure regulator on the HP pump or the pump itself

I have serviced it and changed the fuel filter, I would say it turns over about fast enough, is there anyway to test for the sensor fault or pump fault ? I have had a few hdi s even with high mileage but been no problem.

Lexia session will reveal all, check that it is spinning fast enough (I believe the ECU will not fire the injectors below a certain speed?) and if so, it'll also point you in the right direction as regards fuel pressure

Thinking about the in tank fuel pump after what has been said as when i did the fuel filter I think i saw metal filings, I will pull the filter again and see if any are back, I thought that problem only affected 406s ? could that cause me low fuel pressure ?

Put a new starter motor on it. This is a very common issue with 2.0 HDis of that age. They don't turn over fast enough when the weather is cold - they sound fast enough but aren't.

My Berlingo with the same engine as yours had this exact problem. So did countless others over in the Berlingoforum, and Hell Razor James C5 here.

There is an uprated starter that spins quicker and is 1.8KW instead of 1.4kW. It makes all the difference.

Pretty sure this is the one I put on mine, though it was last year.

I bought a reconditioned starter motor from GSF for around £120, but when I returned the old one in the packaging provided I get £50 or so back. It was a Bosch reworked unit.

The only thing you might need to do is to make up an adaptor lead for the solenoid. The old one had a threaded rod (with friction washer), while the new motor had a spade connector.
