C5 2.0 HDI lack of turbo

Post by Richard Stevens »

The car is a 2006 facelift hatch, and the problem is lack of turbo power after many miles of a long run.
I couldn't even overtake a lorry, but could get up to speed (70 mph) eventually. After a brief stop and restart everything was back in order - loads of power. Other symptoms are a bleeding off of speed in cruise control whilst going up fairly steep inclines.
I'm advised that this is probably the turbo pressure electrovalve (solenoid), but where is it? I'm quite prepared to replace it if I could find it. I've located two, but don't think they're it.

I've trawled previous associated threads but can't find an answer. Anyone able to help, please?

It really needs to go on Diagbox to see what is going on....

Nonetheless, the EV appears to be at the back driver's side of the engine bay (assuming this is a 2.0 16V 138 BHP)

Agreed, Diagbox/Lexia (generic code readers can be a little hit & miss) session is needed to pin down the issue for sure as it can get expensive chucking "likely suspect" parts at a car if it turns out to be something else. Mind you, it helps to build a collection of spares I guess lol.

I found said electrovalve on ebay new for about £55, probably more expensive than a diagnostic session & if there's a forum member nearby you may make a big saving. The members with appropriate kit & willing to help out is here Lexia locations thread

Is there any warning lights/messages associated with the lack of power? I'd expect it to pop the EML on at least if there's an issue with boost pressure control.

I think I've said this before, a few times, before you go changing components check the thin vacuum hoses on the electro valves, the turbo actuator and the vacuum pump. quite often all that is wrong and stopping the turbo working is a pin hole/split in a hose.
Your symptoms could also be the MAF sensor but that usually pops up an engine management warning light.

I have had three failed MAFs and none of them put up an EM light or message on the infoscreen.

Brilliant response, guys, thanks. And yes, it's the DOHC RHR 138bhp engine.

I did clean (by spray) the MAF, and replaced the fuel filter, after a French Peugeot garage supplied a (short) list of recorded defects, which included the intake air temp sensor (P0096), glow plug relay (P1351) (relay replaced), turbo pressure solenoid valve (P2562) - electrical fault, and MAF (P3007).
I don't have access to a Lexia or similar, but I see from the list that 'Bannedbiker' at Wymondham is on the list of potential assists - if you're reading this please react - I'm near Thetford.

On my motor the possible solenoid, at the top left back of the engine (driver's side), displays p/n 96.542.828.80 and 7.00867.01 and 05T088. Don't know the marking system, but at least one of these will be a date identifier.
I have tracked these on the web and the first p/n is certainly available. I'm happy to eliminate it by replacement, having seen the cost. I hear the vacuum comments, but wouldn't that give a more constant problem?
This only seems to happen after a lot of miles, when everything is really thoroughly hot.

Next move is to disconnect the plug and clean with WD40. Got another long trip coming up next week

Thanks again

Missed a question there - no, there was no warning indication at all, which I would have expected too.

I second checking the thin rubber pipes. I was getting an anti-pollution error (and the EML would come on), with my Lexia pointing me in the direction of the EGR. A friend (mickeymoon) suggested I unplug the rubber pipe from the EGR valve to the bulkhead (I don't know what it connects to at the other end), and he found, about 1cm from one end, a tiny hole in the rubber pipe. He trimmed it back, and the anti-pollution error has not occurred since.

Thanks for that, I'll see how it goes on this next trip then try that (though I've had no EMLs), mainly because there's not enough time to get stuck in beforehand! There's no use just tootling around here, nothing untoward happens.......

Right, back a week from my France trip and the car went beautifully except for one flat spot about 2/3 of the way back. It was gone almost as soon as I felt it, and no further events - needless to say, no warnings shown in the car. Recorded 51.3 mpg and 53 mph average speed, so not too grubby.

I think I'll have to live with it until or unless it occurs more regularly. I just feel that every now and again, and when the engine is good and hot, something sticks temporarily - like a solenoid. Difficult to prove if you can't reproduce it!
Then again I could remove the electrovalve and test it as far as I can for freedom of movement...
