C5, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Unread post by demag »

As I did a blog on the Synergie I really ought to do one on the C5 to keep things all together and up to date.

I bought it last week in Borrowash near Derby and it's more or less what I wanted, being a 2004 Series 1 2.2 hdi automatic Exclusive estate with leather and satnav.
I actually wanted the 2.0hdi not the 2.2 but it's turned out ok and it certainly has power if you need it. As most will know from my other thread the electric mirrors were not working when I collected the car but I didn't realise until we were on the road back. After a couple of days fiddling about it turned out that both mirrors had been disconnected in the doors, they are now both reconnected and set up. However the near side one struggles to fold or open, not a huge problem at the moment and I'm sure I'll look at it during the summer. The outside temperature display was also off but is now working ok. Another anomaly is the oil temperature display doesn't work and the oil level display only shows dashes at start up but the oil is on the max line of the dipstick.

It's doing 28-29mpg in heavy-ish stop start traffic which is about what I expected but it's early days yet as I've only done a couple of hundred miles. Now I'm retired I don't do many miles anyway, if I was still working I definitely wouldn't have bought it. The comfort is nice and the lazy power delivery suits my style. I set up the satnav so it knows where "Home" is but I haven't worked out how to get it to take me anywhere! All in good time I suppose, I managed eventually to tune the radio yesterday after many false starts but I haven't touched the cruise control yet. :-D

Jobs to do?
Atf change definitely, cambelt maybe, It was last done in 2011 at 80100 miles and is now on 133500.
I'll check when it's due for a service as there's quite a history file.

Some do not like the 2.2 engine in the mk1 c5 but I loved my one. It was manual, I used to get just under 40 mpg and it was 100% reliable. Loads of power and torque and still the comfiest car I have ever owned.

I'm glad you liked yours Davie, the suspension is very good, it's quite wafty more so than the Bx. Although yesterday it surprised me and did a little dance standing in some traffic where the front seemed to dip as I was coming to a stop, then rose when I stopped, then settled again. It only did it once and was slightly worrying at the time.

Ah, I want to feed the seats, they're not too bad right now but a bit of leather food won't hurt. Any recommendations?

I'd replace the cambelt as a matter of course, 6 years is plenty for a rubber belt in an engine bay IMO no matter how many miles...

Sounds like an activa, a "dance" sat in traffic is something I've heard them described as doing...

I sometimes have my C5 adjust the height front and rear when at traffic lights.

Especially bearing in mind Gibbo's recent failure, that one went way too early but just shows they don't always last the full interval :(

What do you make of the mirror plugs being off now, do you think vandalism/repair done in a hurry or otherwise? Really can't think of any other explanation myself, if it was done to "mask" the slow nearside folding action I would've thought they could have left the adjustment & temp sensor plugs attached. Also I presume they both worked OK when you tested the car originally?

Might be worth posting this info up Dave - it's the back-up function of the mirrors in case of VAN network failure - might be worth a shot to try and reinitialise it, but if not then there's a clue for the culprit wire.
  • It is possible to adjust the driver’s rear view mirror
  • It is not possible to adjust the passenger’s rear view mirror
  • Indexed positioning in reverse gear is not possible
  • When folding rear view mirrors, move until it is in the folded position, then deploy them
As for the leather seats - I always use Autoglym Leather cream - I do them twice a year - always before summer to protect from the heat and again at end of season before winter. Keeps them looking and feeling perfect.

At the minute all mirror adjustments are working including as I noticed today the reverse indexing on the ns mirror. The only thing that is hit or miss is the folding/unfolding on the ns mirror. So both mirrors are now adjusted for rear view just fine. We had our weekly drive out today for our pensioner's lunch and I noticed a very loud clatter from the sunroof. When we got home I noticed the ns leading edge could be moved about 5mm up and down compared to the os which had no movement at all but I can't see how its fixed together. Workshop manual incoming hopefully tomorrow. Please don't tell me it's a roof out job!

Today I was reading about voice commands. I tried the short press on the lighting stalk but did not hear the corresponding beep. So how do I know if it is fitted to my car?

Yes, you should have that option, you have the RT3 system Dave. I had this on my slightly later RT3 on my 2005 Exclusive.

The voice function was a configurable parameter in the ECU from software version 5.5. Can you report back your firmware version and I'll see what's available tomorrow. It should show you how to access the info if you look in your Navidrive manual. Usually just hold the setup button or go into the menu and have a bing there. It may be enabled but deactivated by the last user and if so should be easy enough to re-enable.

Thanks Marc I'll look tomorrow for the firmware version.
I bought a second hand bol from the bay and there is a short section on sunroof adjustment, something else to check this week.
It's also due a service which I can hopefully get done by the end of the month. My pension is a teensie weensy bit squeezed at the moment due to a whole bunch of bills just being paid!

I think you hold the menu button down for a few seconds to get the secondary menu and there should be a Device Description option which should say what version you have along with the map version.

There are 2 types of firmware update for this unit based on VAN or CAN, so it is important to use the right one if needed. Also to use the latest maps generally requires the latest firmware to be installed first. Any info you can throw on the versions you have will help determine the one you may need.

Also, on the front of the head unit, under the leftmost rotary dial you will have a button next to the one that says TA PTY that says either LIST or RDS.

If it says LIST you will be on CAN and should be on version 6.xx of the firmware.
If it says RDS you will be on VAN and should be on version 5.xx of the firmware. The 2 versions are not interchangeable. Confirm this by checking the version in previous post via Menu / Device Information.

Have a check in your manuals - you should of had a System CD that came with the car and possibly the Map CDs, although I wouldn't be surprised if these were not passed on.
If not, I have a manual (for the RT3) if that's missing and the the latest firmware for the RT3 in case you have an earlier version or no system CD.
