GTI Turbo cutting out when hot/idling...

Post by Bilkob »

And so it begins.......
My new GTI Turbo cuts out if left idling for too long.
the fans are cutting in at 90 degrees, and the temp is falling fine,
The car always restarts after about 5-10minutes
I tempted to suspect my aftermarket coils overheating? but have no scientific basis for this
This eve, it disgraced itself, then I got it home, so left it running on the drive, it ran fine, then died after about 10 mins of idling.....
Thoughts?

If you're losing a spark completely with no trace of a miss/rough running before it cuts out then I'd be inclined to suggest crank sensor breaking down.

Quick & dirty check if it's accessible is to chuck cold water over the sensor when it cuts out & see if it restarts immediately/sooner than it would have. Best to check the resistance/output in it's suspect failed state though.

So, ran it idling until at about 90 degrees after fans had cut in and out a few times, it died. Sprayed the crank sensors with brake cleaner, BINGO. Started straight away! Top Tip
A weekend of dilligent cleaning and greasing awaits.........

Brilliant result, glad to have helped in some way :) Replacement might also yield better starting if you're lucky, our Escort seems to dislike picking up a signal from the sensor until it's been cranked a couple of times on occasion..

I've got original coils on the way ( bless you Stan!), I'll clean and check and grease the crank sensors, then see how it is.
Onwards.......!
Car is just too nice not to keep going
