C5 2 'one touch' windows

Post by Dommo »

Hi all

I'm having a strange issue with my C5 where the drivers side window switch refuses to 'one touch' the passenger side and both rear windows all the way up. It works perfectly with the drivers side window, and the other three windows all work perfectly from their own switch. I sometimes seem to have a strange issue where the rear windows can't be controlled properly from the drivers switch either - it sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. But the one touch feature never works from the drivers switch.

I have fitted another switch off another car thinking that might do the trick, but nope, still doesn't work.

Any thoughts on what this could be? Potenially damaged wiring in the door loom? Anything else?

Thanks very much.

On my C5 (Mk1) I had the same issue, but on the front passenger window. It turned out that there was some grot on the relevant contact in the switch gear. I opened up the switch, used contact cleaner on the contacts, and the problem was resolved. I know you have tried a different switch, but do you KNOW that that switch was OK? Taking the switch apart is not difficult, but care is needed. To access the circuit board you want to remove the cover that the cables plug into.

Thanks for the reply

Funny you mention muck in the switch, we had taken the original apart and cleaned it up, seemed to work but it stopped again almost immediately. So we tried some contact 'goo' (can't remember exactly what it was called) that was supposed to remake the contacts. This didn't work either. Then along with trying a new switch I decided maybe the problem lies elsewhere.

Thanks.

PS - is it snowing anywhere else? Snow is falling here in Stoke which is a little strange...!

Well, there was mention on the BBC Breakfast news of 8cm snow in Aviemoor.

I used proper Contact Cleaner on the switches (and on the carbon contacts on the rubber membrane), with assistance from a toothbrush. No issues with the window controls since then.

Had this issue on my MKI and despite contact cleaner (that only worked for a while), I ordered a new driver's door control switch unit and that cured all the problems. Post up your VIN if you want a part number and price.

Well, after stripping the switch down (again), and giving it another clean despite it looking perfectly clean from the last time we were in there, it now works perfectly! Strange how two different switches had EXACTLY the same faults, but there you go!

Cheers all.

I had (on my C5) the problem that the auto function on the front passenger window was not working. When I cleaned it the problem was resolved. I also got (from an C5 Exclusive) a similar switch module (it can cause suitable mirrors to fold in), and when I opened it up I found the same contacts had crud on them. I think it is because the switches further into the cabin space are more likely to have spillages (such as rain drops) get into them.
