Is this a write off ?

Unread post by Ttwlr »

Just had a truck cut across white lines exiting onto slip road and hit me.

Just looks like a lot of superficial panel damage to me.

But given the age of the car it'll likely be a Cat C write-off but easily enough repairable if there is no bodyshell distortion.

Do all the doors and tailgate still open and close normally?

Yep:...essentially the work on the rear wheel arch panel will write that off.

It would beat out (untidy) and be legal so it may be a good bet to take the money for it and buy the car back. Chuck £150 into it and drive it till it dies.

Panel gap and lamp look ok but maybe check the tank filler for leaks. I think write off due mainly to labour charges etc and not necessarily the amount of damage.

An already damaged car is "liberating"

If the trucking company is known they may be very interested in an "offer" to do it off the books as well to save their premiums.

A car of that age will be written of as "uneconomical to repair" for literally just a scrape on the bumper, so they won't even entertain sorting that level of damage.

Try the company first and see if they'll sort it independently first.
Current fleet:
07 Volvo V70 SE D5, 88 Renault 25 Monaco, 85 Sinclair C5, 84 Trabant 601S, 73 AC Model 70, 62 Rover 110.

My son-in law's Alfa GT cloverleaf, five years old, was sideswiped by a truck and written off due to the cost of panels and fitting.
It was worse than that but not by much.

Happened to us in a supermarket car park - juggernaut making deliveries - they made a large payment as an alternative to going through insurance.

Never ceases to amaze me why the supermarket has the loading bay access through the car park and then sends the delivery during the day when the poor sod driving it has to manoeuvre through the Muppets in their little tin cans on wheels who can't even park between two lines.

It's just asking for trouble.

I've had Cat C and D cars for the past 25 years. Never had a problem until the C4GP I bought a couple of months back which turned out to be more trouble than it was worth so I stripped it . . . and bought swmbo another one that was a finance repo.

Muppets aside, this particular one in our case was 10-15 car bays wide and should never of been there in the first place - he went in the customer car park instead of the delivery park and got stuck!

I had a oil delivery tanker knock down my garden wall. Local firm, called their yard manager who said have you called your house insurance company, no said I, good said he, some builders will be round tomorrow morning. And they were. Their excess is usually 4 figures and anything less than that they prefer to sort it directly. You might be lucky.
