Towbar wiring 2004 C5 Mk11

Can anyone tell me what is the purpose of the box next to the spare wheel. My earlier car (2001) did not have this and the towbar wiring has been scotchlocked directly into the wiring loom with a TEB7AS relay. Can I repeat this (with soldered wires) and ignore the box?
