C5 (X7 HDI 165) - Oil level indicator broke off, inside engine

Post by zakazak »

Hello everyone,

today I made an oil service on my Citroen C5 (X7 HDI 165, 2011) an when I pulled out the oil level indicator to check the oil level, I noticed that the tip of the indicator broke off.

Pretty much the whole indicator reading broke off (so about 2cm length missing). Its made of an orange plastic.

Is there an easy way to remove it from the engine / pipe?
Could it damage the engine?
Without reading from the indicator, is the board computer message "oil level correct" trustworthy? I filled in exactly 5 litre oil and also changed the oil filter. Its the HDI 165 with 163bhp (2.000ccm).

Thanks in advance !

There was another incidence of this just recenly - apparently not uncommon.
See this thread for details.

Thanks, seems like dipstick can just stay inside the engune without any worries lol. But shouldnt it end up in the oil filter?

Also: any opinion on my oil level and if 5 litre is fine ?

Yes, 5 litres of oil is fine.

This happened to me about 2 weeks ago.

But, when I did oil changes before I only needed 5 litres and this was just below the max mark on the dipstick before it broke.

Probably for the best as the oil level indicator on the dash may not be completely reliable.
Does your C5 use any oil between changes?
My early one doesn't - to the extent that the level rarely if ever gets checked, not even the dash display.
Not a recommended attitude I know but this is my second one and never gets any oil between services.
I did used to check them weekly, then monthly, then 'sometimes' but there has never really been any need.

It won't get as far as the oil filter as there's a mesh screen strainer on the pickup to stop the oil pump picking up things that might damage it.

Worst it will likely do is appear from the sump drain one day when you're changing the oil. Being plastic there's really not much to be done to retrieve it unless you really fancy dropping the sump.

Does highlight why I reckon all metal dipsticks are a much more sensible idea though...

I agree. The one in my Berlingo works well, but the one in the 207 says "oil ok" when the thing is so low there is no oil showing on the dipstick.

I wonder if the oil level sensor has got some crud on it, fooling it to believe it has enough oil? Might it be worth using an oil flush at the next service?
